Headline: Matt Parziale Selected by the United States Golf Association to Compete at the 2018 South American Amateur Championship on January 13-16, 2018
For Immediate Release: December 4, 2017
Far Hills, NJ. –Massachusetts native Matt Parziale, a firefighter with the Brockton Fire Department and a multi-time Massachusetts Golf Association champion, got national recognition back in October when he went on a magnificent run through match play of the 37th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in Atlanta Georgia, which was capped off by an 8 & 6 victory over North Carolina’s Josh Nichols in the 36-hole Championship final.
Less than two months removed from his triumph, it was announced Monday that Parziale will take his talents to the international level, as the 30-year-old was among four amateurs chosen by the United States Golf Association to represent the homeland in the 2018 South American Amateur Championship, being contested from January 13-16 at Martindale Country Club, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Parziale will join Scott Harvey, the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, Kelsey Chugg, the 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion, and Julia Potter, the 2013 and 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur winner, in the 72-hole, individual stroke play competition for men and women. This will be Parziale’s first time representing the red, white and blue in international competition.
“I am looking forward to going away with Scott, Julia and Kelsey,” said Parziale, the 2017 Massachusetts Amateur Champion and a four-time Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year. “It’s exciting. I’ve never been to South America, and I’m looking forward to representing the United States of America in this competition.”
Following a season of firsts for Parziale, who also took home victories in the Massachusetts Amateur Four-Ball Championship, the Norfolk County Classic, the Amateur Invitational, the Ouimet Memorial Tournament and the Tarlow Invitational, Parziale will begin a busy 2018 schedule that already includes exemptions into the 2018 Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta, the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach.
“We are extremely excited that longtime Massachusetts golfer Matt Parziale has been selected to represent the United States of America by the USGA and to see him join three of the nation’s top competitors in Scott Harvey, Kelsey Chugg and Julia Potter at the 2018 South American Amateur Championship,” said Jesse Menachem, the MGA Executive Director. “We are very proud of his accomplishments and the class in which he has represented our organization and the Bay State golf community as a whole in prior events, and we are thrilled that he’ll be able to showcase his talents to a worldwide audience.”
Fresh off a T11 finish at the 2017 Goslings Invitational in Bermuda, Parziale currently sits at No. 224 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Prior to his departure to South America, Matt will be among the several MGA and WGAM Champions who will be honored at the 23rd annual MGA Salute to Champions Dinner, being held on Thursday, January 4 at Wellesley Country Club. Tickets are available for purchase at mgalinks.org.
