HANDICAP FAQ - POSTING NINE-HOLE SCORES.

Q. I was on a work trip and had a chance to play a quick nine holes with colleagues. How do I post that score?

Playing nine holes away from home? Be sure to post those scores.

A. Playing a nine-hole round of golf is not only a fun way to stay connected to the game we all love, it is also very easy to post for handicap purposes.

Each nine holes on a golf course has its own USGA Course Rating™ and Slope Rating®, so make sure to post the nine-hole score with the appropriate nine-hole USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating.

It is also important to remember that two nine-hole scores will eventually be combined to create an 18-hole score and be designated with the letter “C” (e.g., 85C). So in other words don't worry if you post that first nine-hole score and it doesn't immediately show up on your record.

Nine-hole scores are combined in the order that they are received into the player's scoring record from any club or from any combination of nines, regardless of score type. For example, a front nine middle tee score could combine with a front nine back tee score made from any course.

Please visit Section 5-2c and 5-2d of the USGA Handicap System manual for further reference.

The policies and procedures for posting a nine-hole score can be found in Section 5-2 & 10-5 of the USGA Handicap System. In addition, the answers to many of the most common inquiries regarding the USGA Handicap System™ can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the USGA’s Handicapping page.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mike Wice at mwice@mgalinks.org.

CELEBRATING EARTH DAY & GOLF - APRIL 22

Click the image above for 5 fun facts about golf!

Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22!

There is no better time than now to remember that golf is a sport for a lifetime that delivers more than 2 million jobs and $69 billion in annual economic impact while contributing $3.9 billion per year for philanthropic causes -- more than all other sports combined.

As part of the celebration of "Earth Day" on April 22, here are five facts about golf that help promote the sport and the environment:

1. Golf courses are professionally managed landscapes where environmental stewardship is important – from using water and nutrients efficiently to implementing improved methods of erosion control.

2. In general, the golf industry is striving to deliver firm playing surfaces that are better for everyone and improve the bottom line. More than two-thirds of golf courses report that they are keeping turfgrass drier than in the past.

3. The golf industry is continually investing in research to identify drought-tolerant grasses and improve water conservation through best management practices.

4. Golf courses provide habitats for wildlife, including protected species.

5. Many golf courses have recycling programs to reduce and reuse.
