5 STATS TO KEEP TRACK OF THIS SEASON

Score posting season is almost here! No matter your level of preparedness heading into the season, measuring your golf game by tracking these key stats is something you shouldn’t shy away from committing to early on. Taking the time to keep track of these statistics now will help you better understand what areas of your game you need to work on as you get further into the season. Lucky for you, your Mass Golf membership comes with an easy way to track most of these stats, the GHIN Mobile App. But we can get into those details later in this article.

Let’s get started!

FAIRWAYS HIT

It is always good to get things started out on the right foot and hitting a fairway is a great boost of confidence for any golfer. Make it a goal to hit at least 50% of fairways during your round. Landing in the short grass is the goal here, but keep in mind that not all “fairways missed” are bad misses. As long as that ball stays in play, and you have a good look at the green, do not get discouraged. For stat keeping purposes, be sure to stick with this traditional stat and only count those that stay in the fairway.

We don’t need to tell you how important these next two statistics are. If you don’t know, now you know… your short game is where you can make the most improvement overall.

GREENS IN REGULATION (GIR)

Tracking your Greens in Regulation (GIR) is one of the more important statistics that gauges how well you get from the tee box to the green. A Green in Regulation is if you make it on the green in the specified number of shots or less. So one shot on a par 3, two shots on a par 4, and three shots on a par 5. A benchmark for the average golfer would be to hit about 5 Greens in Regulation each round. If this is a stat that you are struggling with, don’t worry! We will be back with some more tips to improve upon this number later this season.

PUTTS PER HOLE

You know what they say… drive for show, putt for dough. They aren’t kidding. The goal here is 2 putts or less. It’s that simple right?

SCRAMBLING

This is another traditional stat that measures part of your short game performance. Scrambling is the percentage of time a player misses the green in regulation, but still makes par or better. Here is a scenario to help further explain this. If your tee shot on a par 4 hits the fairway and your second shot misses the green this results in a missed green. Then for your third shot you chip on and make the putt. This is a successful scramble because you made par or better.

HANDICAP INDEX®

The handicap index is the ultimate statistic you can keep track of. Make sure you are up to speed on everything there is to know about what goes into calculating your handicap index through the World Handicap System.

When it comes to tracking all this information, Mass Golf members have access to one of the best tools out there, the GHIN Mobile App. If you have not set yourself up with this app, take a few minutes to do so and you will not regret it. You can enter scores in real time, keep track of these statistics, and also test out the new GPS function.

Remember that with many of the traditional golf stats we covered, they do tell a story, but only part of the story. There are plenty more statistics you can analyze but this is always a great place to start and a great place to come back to if you feel like you are overcomplicating things. So get out there and start tracking away!
