6 Mistakes To Avoid When Playing In The Off Season - MASSGOLF

6 MISTAKES TO AVOID DURING A cold ROUND OF GOLF THIS OFF SEASON

Plenty of courses are beginning to open their doors to golfers in 2022, and let’s face it, some of them never close for the season. Whether you are a seasoned year-round golfer in Massachusetts or someone that is eager to get their year started earlier than usual, being prepared and avoiding some of these mistakes will be the key to a more comfortable round of golf.

LEAVING YOUR GOLF CLUBS IN THE CAR OVERNIGHT

We all used to leaving our golf clubs in the car for long periods of time but during the off season it is best to keep your clubs out of the cold before and after your round. We aren’t equipment experts but it is important to note that grips, shafts, and golf balls can all be damaged by colder temperatures. Protect your investment and take care of those clubs…even if you get frustrated with them from time to time.

WEARING SPIKELESS GOLF SHOES

Cold temperatures mean harder and, at times, slicker ground conditions. Having the the proper footwear will help lower the likelihood of injury while out there. Opt for the spiked golf shoes and make sure they are clean of debris so that you can make better contact with the ground. If you are looking to invest in some spiked golf shoes, head over to FootJoy.com and check out what they have to offer. We may be a bit biased but they are the #1 Shoe In Golf.

SWINGING OUT OF YOUR SHOES

Not making the proper adjustments to your swing in colder weather rounds is a recipe for a long frustrating day. Golf balls will not travel as far on colder days and you will need to adjust your expectations appropriately. (Our friends over at Titleist break down what happens to golf balls in cold weather if you are interested in learning more. NOT LAYERING APPROPRIATELY

Layering is a science and when done properly it will keep you warm without having too much impact on your swing. The start of your round and the end of your round may look very different as temperatures can drop dramatically in a short period of time during the off season months. Don’t get caught out there without the right amount of clothing. If you are using a pushcart then there will be plenty of room to carry along those warmer layers.

EXPECTING THE FACILITIES TO BE OPEN AND AVAILABLE

Even when we are in-season, women have to plan ahead for bathroom breaks. Some courses that may be open for play right now may not have all their facilities, restrooms, or locker rooms open and available for use. Be sure to stop somewhere ahead of time before you get to the course just to be safe. Also, if the bathrooms aren’t open, chances are that you may not have access to purchasing water and snacks as well.

NOT KNOWING WHEN TO STOP

Even if you have prepped the best you can and go into the day with the right intentions, sometimes we have to listen to our body when it says it is time to stop. Playing in colder temperatures and during the off season you can find yourself in a couple of different difficult situations. If you just aren’t getting warmed up enough after a few holes, it might be time to toss in the towel and head to the 19th hole a bit earlier than expected, there is no need to risk frostbite or hypothermia. Maybe this is the first time playing after a long break, fitting in 18 holes is not worth the risk of injury or strain that would set you back from playing in the warmer months.

Play Smart. Respect the Course. And Enjoy the Walk this Off Season.
