Norton, MA — Last year’s Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship at Waubeeka Golf Links was a tournament for the ages.

It was a battle that came down to a three-hole sudden death playoff between Matt Cowgill and Cody Booska, two newer faces to the MGA over the past few years. The pair held off another newcomer, John Clancy, as well as longtime MGA competitor Herbie Aikens, who both finished one stroke behind the two at the end of 36-holes and finished T-3 in the 35th playing of the Championship Proper.

When the tournament returns August 8-9 to the Nicklaus Course at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, the competitive spirit that made last year’s event so memorable will undoubtedly be mirrored.

The first step to returning to that memorable event and the MGA Amateur Public Links as a whole were announced Monday as the Massachusetts Golf Association unveiled the six dates and qualifying sites for competitors interested in competing in the 36th playing of the MGA Amateur Public Links Championship later this year.

Qualifying for the MGA Amateur Public Links Championship will begin on June 20 at Sandy Burr CC and will be the first of five dates in the final 10 days of June where APL qualifiers will be held. Gardner Municipal GC (June 21), Cranberry Valley GC (June 26), The Ledges GC (June 27) and Bradford CC (June 29) to round out the month of June.

One final qualifier will be held following the Fourth of July weekend - on July 5 - at D.W. Field GC in Brockton.

The MGA Amateur Public Links Championship is the only MGA Championship where the field is limited to bona fide public course players at a public MGA member club (a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week).

All players must also have an up-to-date MGA/GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 12.0 as determined by the June 1, 2017 Handicap Revision.

Registration for all 12 MGA Championship begins next Thursday, February 2nd at 10:00 a.m., while the entry close date for the MGA Amateur Public Links Championship will be Thursday, June 1st at 5:00 p.m.
