Norton, MA — Two Bay State Member Clubs will be among the 114 sites in 44 states and Canada that will host local qualifiers ahead of this year’s playing of the U.S. Open Championship.
The 117th USGA Championship Proper, where Dustin Johnson will look to defend his title, will be played at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin from June 15-18. All local qualifiers will be held between May 2 and 18. The announcement was made by the USGA earlier this week.
This year’s two local US Open qualifiers will be held at the Nicklaus Course of Plymouth’s Pinehills Golf Course and at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston in the Bay State’s Berkshire region. The Pinehills GC’s qualifier will take place on Thursday, May 11 while the later of the two, at Crumpin-Fox, will be held on Tuesday, May 16. Both qualifiers will be conducted over 18 holes.
“We are excited to have these two great clubs serve as host sites for such a prominent championship,” said MGA Executive Director Jesse Menachem. “We have been very fortunate to have a long lasting and positive relationship with the USGA, and we are grateful that the opportunity to showcase these MGA Member Clubs at a national level. Both will be a challenging yet memorable experience for those competitors looking to advance to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship.”
Neither Pinehills or Crumpin Fox are strangers to the MGA or USGA scene as both have hosted numerous Championship events in recent memory. Pinehills held a US Open Championship qualifier each year from 2010-2015 while Crumpin-Fox hosted US Open Championships qualifiers in 2011, 2013 and 2015 in addition to serving as the host site of the 2012 MGA Senior Four Ball Championship.
Online player registration for the 2017 U.S. Open will begin in the first week of March on the USGA website (https://champs.usga.org/index.html) and players must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 1.4, or be a professional to be eligible.
Additionally, Rhode Island’s Newport Country Club will be hosting a US Open local qualifier on Tuesday, May 16.
The three aforementioned clubs are the only three scheduled to host US Open local qualifiers in the New England Region. Florida is hosting the most US Open local qualifiers with 16 sites, followed by California (10) and Texas (7).
