Headline: Lisa McGill Claims Medalist Honors at U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Qualifying; Sterling's Cindy Fentross Also Advances in Haverhill

Haverhill, MA — Massachusetts native Cindy Fentross was one of nine women to advance to the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship on Thursday from Haverhill Country Club, finishing eight strokes behind medalist Lisa McGill of Philadelphia, who fired an even par 70 in the 18-hole qualifier.

Fentross, of Sterling, and the eight other qualifiers earned their placement in the Championship Proper being held at Waverly Country Club in Portland, Oregon from September 9-14.

The original field, which saw more than 40 competitors vying for a spot in the USGA Championship, was narrowed down to the top nine competitors plus two alternates spots following the 18-hole qualifier.

With the victory, Fentross advances to her second straight U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship after competing in the 2016 Championship Proper, which was held at Wellesley Country Club and was the only club in the Bay State to host a USGA Championship during the 2016 season. There, the former WGAM Amateur Championship runner up Fentross defeated local Pam Kuong in the round of 64 before falling to Kim Eaton of Mesa, Arizona.

The nine competitors who qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and the two alternates spots are listed below.

In addition to Fentross, Lisa McGill, Helene Chartand, Marie-Therese Torti all advanced to the Round of 32 at last year’s U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship while Dana Harrity competed in the Round of 16 at Wellesley.  

Haverhill Country Club, which served as the host site of the 2017 Massachusetts Four Ball Championship earlier this season, was site number 19 of 25 US Senior Women’s Amateur Championship qualifiers taking place between July 24 and August 15.
