Kernwood Country Club and Walpole Country Club hosted over 100 golfers apiece Monday, all striving to qualify for the 115th Massachusetts Open. Among the 48 players who qualified between the two courses, 35 were amateur golfers.
The Championship Proper will take place June 10-12 at Sacconnesset Golf Club in Falmouth. Sacconnesset is a Rees Jones designed course first opened for play on June 3, 2007 and is recognized as the last new course to be built on raw land on Cape Cod. The club previously hosted the Mass Open in 2017.
Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.
On Monday at Kernwood, only one player finished in the red with a score of 1-under-par 69. That honor belonged to Matt Baran, veteran head golf professional at The Ridge Club, who poured in three birdies on the front nine and cruised to a spot in the Mass Open for the second time in three years.
Behind him was a bevy of 11 amateurs out of the 13 who qualified. Kernwood members Christian Emmerich, of Boston College, and Sean Dully, of Southern New Hampshire, shot 70 and 72, respectively. Brian Corbett (Mount Pleasant Golf Club) bookended his round with a pair of birdies to qualify for the first time. Chris Pickreign (Shaker Hills Country Club), who plays for the UMass Amherst club golf team, shot 71 and was also among the first-time qualifiers.
Among those who made the cut at 72 were Holy Cross junior Matt Williams, UMass club golfer Markus Pierre (The Kittansett Club), and 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier Ben Balter (Weston Golf Club).
On Wednesday at Charter Oak, Merrimack junior JR Robinson (Whitinsville Golf Club) qualified for his first Mass Open by shooting even-par 71, the top score among 18 qualifiers. He split medalist honors with Clark Robinson (South Windsor, CT), who finished 3rd in 2018 at GreatHorse as well as UConn assistant coach Ferdinand Mueller (Storrs, CT).
Several Charter Oak members advanced including former Lincoln-Sudbury teammates Ryan Whitehead (72), Rutgers senior Weston Jones (73), and Brendan Frain (73). Whitehead advanced for the first time, while Frain and Jones return after competing in the 2024 field. Bryant University grad student Tyler Dupuis (Pleasant Valley Country Club), a 2023 U.S. Amateur qualifier made three birdies to match Whitehead with a 72.
Doran Gibbs (Student Member/MIAA), a 16-year-old Wellesley native, made birdie on the first two holes to qualify with a 73, matching Penn freshman Ryan Chang (Belmont Country Club), who earned a return invite since first competing in 2022 at Longmeadow Country Club.
Sacconnesset member Christopher Poli was among seven players to make it on the number at 74. Mason Malouf (Nashawtuc Country Club) overcame a pair of double bogeys with clutch birdies on the 15th and 18th to qualify, as did Mario Wilson (Green Hill Municipal Course), who surged with a 1-under 35 on the back nine capped off by birdies on the 16th and 18th.
On Thursday at Ocean Edge, there were several impressive scores, with 17 players advancing with a cutline of 1-under-par 71. St. John’s University commit Max McColgan (Nashawtuc Country Club) qualified for his first Mass Open in style by turning in a sizzling 7-under 65 that included seven consecutive birdies (Holes 8-14). McColgan, who is part of Team Massachusetts in the U.S. National Development Program, made nine birdies total.
Finished one stroke back was URI standout Sean Magarian (Pleasant Valley Country Club) and 2016 Mass Amateur winner Brendan Hunter (Red Tail Golf Club), with eight and nine birdies, respectively. Local Wyatt Frazier (Woods Hole Golf Club) & Athan Goulous (Peabody, MA) also advanced with a 4-under 68, while Alejandro Soto (TPC Boston) made eagle on the par-5 17th to move above the cutline.
Among those making the cut at 1-under was Dennis native Ian Dearmond (USGA/Mass Golf GC), who made birdie on the par-5 4th and par on the rest to clinch his spot. Barnstable High School standout Colin Gleason (Barnstable Golf) carded an eagle on the 9th and with birdies on the 16th and 18th, played himself into the Mass Open for the first time.
