Emmerich Prevails In Playoff To Win Mass Mid-Amateur - MASSGOLF

After a decade of Mass Golf Competition, Christian Emmerich Earns First Statewide victory At Thorny Lea

BROCKTON, Massachusetts (October 9, 2026) – Christian Emmerich (Kernwood Country Club) has played Mass Golf events since he was 15. Ten years later, his first championship came with a thank-you speech that, he admitted, gave me more nerves than the playoff victory that came before it.

Emmerich, 25, sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole Friday to prevail over former Williams standout Will Kannegieser (Taconic Golf Club) and capture the 43rd Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship at Thorny Lea Golf Club in his event debut. For the former Holy Cross and Boston College lefty, the victory rewarded years of near-misses and second-guessing.

“It feels great,” a relieved Emmerich said afterward. “It’s a lot of years of losing in the semis at the Mass Junior, losing in the Mass Am a couple times in match play. It’s a lot of experimenting, working, ups downs, think you got it, then you don’t.”

Wind gusting steadily around 15 mph complicated club selection and putting throughout Friday’s final round. Kevin Gately (Pembroke Country Club), who reached 5-under during his round, posted the day’s only under-par score, a 68, to climb into a tie for fourth.

With three holes remaining, however, the title race centered on Emmerich, Kannegieser, and Emmerich’s playing partner Ryan Gendron (Falmouth Country Club). Birdies on 12 and 15 had put Emmerich ahead, but a mishit chip from the back of 17 and a putt left well short from off the front of 18 contributed to closing bogeys. Kannegieser watched from the clubhouse porch, bustling porch of curious onlookers with wafting cigar smoke, as Emmerich’s finish brought them level.

After missing a similar chance to the winner to win on 18, Emmerich made a putt to extend the playoff earlier, but wasn’t able to hit the approaches into the green he wanted to.

His final trip down called for a new strategy. Emmerich’s original driver had cracked several weeks earlier, and he had struggled with its replacement. After three consecutive drives into the right rough, he slightly opened the clubface at address and found the fairway, setting up an approach above the pin.

Emmerich had watched Kannegieser leave similar putts high, and his own par attempt in regulation had missed above the hole from the other side. On the decisive downhill birdie putt, he adjusted toward the low side and trusted his stroke.

“I gave it a little something on the low side, and rolled it on my line, and thankfully kind of knew it was going in a couple feet out,” he said.

After pumping his fist when the putt fell he celebrated with family and his girlfriend. Work kept Christian’s younger brother, Aidan Emmerich, from watching in person, but Christian was looking forward to celebrating together, just as they had after Aidan’s Mass Amateur victory this summer.

Next spring at Erin Hills, they’ll arrive for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with a title apiece and a chance to compete together, just as they have growing up on the North Shore.

In the meantime, “We’ll definitely celebrate tonight,” Christian said.

  • Christopher Tarallo, the Round 1 leader with a 66, finished T11 to lead Thorny Lea members. Steve Tasho, the 1998 winner, and Conor O’Brien both finished T16.
  • The 15 lowest scorers and ties have earned an exemption into next year’s Mass Mid-Amateur, taking place September 28-30, 2027, at Country Club of Pittsfield.
