Celebrating its 109th year, the Championship remains the only Mass Golf event of the year with a professional purse. An additional five competitors, who shot a 4-over 76, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.

Holliston Massachusetts native and professional golfer Ryan Clancy led the charge on Thursday, firing a day-low 4-under 68 to earn medalist honors and book his ticket to his first Massachusetts Open championship as a professional. Clancy, a former collegiate golfer at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, last played in the Massachusetts Open Championship in 2014 when he was still an amateur.

Clancy was one of 10 Massachusetts natives in Thursday’s field to earn a berth in the Championship Proper, joining the likes of the Chris Dejohn, Mackenzie Nelson (a), Christopher Tallman, Dan Cappucci, Victor Galvani, George Bell III (a), Zach Camarra (a) and Chad Stumpo.

In total, 51 have now qualified for the 2018 Championship with one qualifier remaining. Dejohn, who placed second on the leaderboard with a final 1-under 71 mark, will get to compete on his home course in June, as he becomes the first GreatHorse member to qualify for the state Open.

Garren Poirier (a), of Vermont, who competed at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball last weekend with Massachusetts golfer Alex Jeffers, placed T3 after shooting even-par 72.
