For Immediate Release: June 5, 2019

DALTON, Massachusetts – On the third day of qualifying for the 2019 Massachusetts Amateur Championship, being contested from July 15-19 at The Country Club in Chestnut Hill, 11 competitors who carded scores between 3 -under 69 and 4-over 75 advanced to the Championship Proper from Wednesday’s qualifying site – Wahconah Country Club in Dalton.

Hopkinton resident Jimmy Hervol, who recently became the first player in over 25 years to represent the University of Connecticut at the NCAA Golf Championship, topped all competitors in Western Massachusetts on Wednesday, carding four birdies and an eagle en route to his spot atop the leaderboard.

After bogeying the second hole, Hervol birdied the par-4 third hole to get back to even, then eagled the par-5 eighth hole, which at 518 yards was the longest faced by competitors on the day. Hervol added birdies on the 11th and 14th holes and finished with a final tally on the 18th to edge the runner-up by a three stroke margin. South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek, a member of the Fairfield University men’s golf team and a recent participant in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship finished at even-par 71.

An additional three competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.

Entries were open to amateur competitors with a 4.4 Handicap Index who were either exempt based on previous performance in Mass Golf competition and/or USGA events, or who advanced from one of 12 qualifying sites held across the Bay State between May 29 and June 26.
