NORTON, Massachusetts –  On the first day of qualifying for the 2019 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship, 32 competitors from Tuesday’s two qualifiers at Blissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge and The Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley earned entrance into the Championship Proper being contested at Yarmouth’s Bayberry Hills Golf Course in early August.

At the Blissful Meadows site, Blackstone Golf Club’s Daniel Serafin topped the field of 73 competitors in the field, finishing as the only competitor who went below par. Serafin, of Millbury, began play on the back nine of the course Tuesday, and despite two bogeys in his first three holes, came back and tallied four straight birdies to make the turn at 2-under 34. Once on his second nine, the 50-year old Serafin birdied the par-3 fifth hole and put an exclamation point on his round by tallying a sixth and final birdie on the par-4 ninth hole, which played at his 18th hole.

Two competitors shot even par-72 in the 18-hole qualifier while 17 in total advanced from the qualifying site.

In South Hadley, Cyprian Keyes’ Daniel Falcucci shot a 2-under 70 to lead the contingent of 15 golfers who advanced to the August Championship Proper. The 36-year old Falcucci, of Auburn, carded birdies on three of his first five holes on Tuesday, then added an additional birdie on the par-4 15th hole en route to his top spot on the leaderboard.

Established in 1982, the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship is open to amateur golfers who are bona fide public course players at a public Mass Golf member club (a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week) and maintain an up-to-date Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 12.0 (as determined by the June 1, 2019 Handicap Revision).
