LEXINGTON, Massachusetts – On the fourth and final day of qualifying for the 2019 Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship, 11 competitors from Monday’s qualifier at Lexington GC earned entrance into the Championship Proper being contested at Bernardston’s Crumpin-Fox Club in mid-August. For the second straight year, this year’s Championship Proper will feature a mix of both stroke play and match play, as all competitors will play 36-holes of stroke play over the first two days of competition, with the top-16 competitors advancing to match play for the final two days of competition.
An additional two competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot at today’s qualifying site earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
Looking to advance to his second straight Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship, Andover’s Mac Lee tallied five birdies to one bogey and 12 pars to finish at 4-under 67 in Monday’s 18-hole qualifier. The 16-year old Lee, who plays out of Andover Country Club and competes regularly on the Futures Collegians World Tour, opened up with five straight birdies to kick off his round, birdied the par-4 sixth hole and the par-3 eighth hole to make the turn at 1-under 34, then carded an additional three birdies on the back nine to net the top spot on the leaderboard.
Lee joined Nashawtuc’s Riley Rohlfs as the only two competitors to finish under par on Monday. Behind Lee’s 4-under 67 mark, Monday’s qualifying scores to 5-over 76.
Celebrating its 101st year in 2019, the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship has long been associated as one of the top junior golf competitions in the country. It is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club and who have reached their 14th birthday and will not reach their 19th birthday by midnight August 22, 2019.
