NORTON, Massachusetts – On Monday, July 29, more local competitors will be among the many fighting for spots to compete in national competition when Mass Golf hosts both a U.S. Senior Amateur Championship qualifier and a U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship qualifier at The Kittansett Club in Marion. Following the respective 18-hole qualifiers, four spots to the 65th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Old Chatham Golf Club (N.C.) will be awarded to the four-lowest scorers while 10 spots to the 58th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Cedar Rapids Country Club (Iowa) will also be earned.
The Kittansett Club is also the site of the 2020 Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
This marks the 11th and 12th USGA Championship qualifiers to be conducted by Mass Golf this season, and is the second time this year that two USGA qualifiers have been conducted on the same day and at the same facility. Earlier this year, Mass Golf conducted both the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifiers at Marlborough Country Club on June 24.
U.S. SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER
53 competitors who list their residency in Massachusetts will be among the 84 in the field when the competition begins Monday morning at the Kittansett Club – all vying for one of four spots to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship slated for August 24-29 at Durham, North Carolina’s Old Chatham Golf Club. Among the competitors in the field are reigning Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball champions Joe Walker and Kevin Carey, as well as Stow’s John McNeill and Boxford’s Stephen Camara. All four competed in last year’s U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club.
In addition to the four spots to the Championship that will be on the line, first and second alternate positioning will also be up for grabs. Reigning George M. Cohen Mass Golf Senior Player of the Year Frank Vana, Jr., of Boxford, is exempt into the Championship field as a result of his 2017 performance where he finished as a semifinalist in the national event. Monday’s qualifier is the 18th of 49 U.S. Senior Amateur qualifiers being conducted across the United States until August 5.
U.S. SENIOR WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER
The 15th of 25 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur qualifiers being conducted across the U.S. until Monday, August 1, Monday’s qualifier at The Kittansett Club features 39 competitors who will vie for one of 10 spots to next month’s Championship Proper being conducted at Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa beginning August 24. Of the 39 in the field, 19 of the competitors list their residency in Massachusetts, including that of Sharon Hayes (Lexington), Joanne Catlin (Ashburnham) and Kristen Henderson (Auburn), who had all advanced to last year’s Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Orchid Island Club in Florida. 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up Pamela Kuong, of Wellesley, is exempt into the Championship field as a result of her placement amongst the Top 20 age-eligible points leader in Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Tee times for Monday’s U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifier will begin at 12:00 p.m.
