mass golf season begins with first Week of mass amateur qualifying

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 15, 2020

UPDATED JUNE 18

NORTON, Massachusetts – The long layoff from competition finally ended for several golfers across the state Monday as the first Mass Golf events were held on a statewide level. The early morning clouds and breeze gave way to bright, sunny conditions by mid-morning, which provided comfortable conditions for the hundreds of golfers competing.

Marshfield Country Club, Pocassett Golf Club and Stockbridge Golf Club all hosted the first round of qualifying events for the 112th Massachusetts Amateur Championship, set to take place July 13-17 at The Kittansett Club.

Overall, 38 golfers qualified for the Championships Proper, half of them coming from Marshfield, where nine players tied at the cutline (4-over 74). Another 12 players advanced Thursday during a qualifier at Green Hill Municipal GC in Worcester.

At Green Hill, 16-year-old Dedham native Joey Lenane (KOHR Golf Center) ran away with medalist honors by sinking seven birdies to finish with a 7-under-par 65. Lenane, a rising junior at Xaverian and former Mass Golf Young Golfers’ Amateur champion, made birdie on three of four par-5s, including the 502-yard 16th. In the process, he tied a course record.

Ricky Stimets (Barnstable Golf), Sean Magarian (Pleasant Valley CC) and Kyle Tibbetts (Framingham CC) also were under par, shooting 69, 70 and 71, respectively. Magarian, who also carded a bogey-free round, will attend Assumption College in the fall.

Joey Lenane, the 2017 Young Golfers’ Amateur champion, bested the qualifying field by 4 strokes Thursday, finishing with 7 birdies and making par the rest of the way.

At Marshfield, University Notre Dame rising senior Alex Jamieson (Marshfield CC) earned medalist honors by shooting a 1-under-par 69. Jamieson was 2-over on the front nine but collected four birdies on the back nine and saved par on the 18th to finish his round.

Incoming University of Michigan freshman Jack O’Donnell and Mashpee High School rising senior Colin Spencer shot 1-over to earn their spots, as did Sam Jenkins (Plymouth CC) and Andrew Luther (Boston GC).

Ryan Whitney (Old Sandwich GC), former NHL pro and now Barstool podcast host, was one of nine players who shot 4-over. He got in with Doug Clapp (Old Sandwich), who started his round with three consecutive birdies, as well as Andrew DiRamio (Marshfield CC), who qualified for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with Whitney.

Down at Pocasset, located on Cape Cod, Harvard graduate Maxwell Campion (Woods Hole GC) split medalist honors with Dean Hajedemos (Brookline GC), as both shot 1-under 71. Campion was steady with just two birdies and a bogey, while Hajedemos shook off a double bogey on the par-3 sixth hole by rallying for birdie on the 14th, 16th and 18th.

Zachary Morton (Sandy Burr CC) qualified with a 76, thanks in part to an ace on the 184-yard, par-3 15th. Jake Peer (Winchester CC) qualified with a 72, despite starting with two bogeys then a double bogey on the third. He then birdied the next two holes and finished par or better the rest of the way, finished T3 with Kevin Blaser (Fall River CC).

Out in Western Massachusetts, Jarrod Goss (Springfield CC) shot the only sub-70 and finished 2-under to lead five qualifiers at Stockbridge. Goss made bogey on 13 and 14, but answered with a birdie on the 15th, his fifth of the round.

Trevor Lopez (Winchester CC), last year’s Mass Junior Amateur finalist, also earned a spot in the Championship Proper, making key birdies on the 15th and 16th.
