BRETTON WOODS, New Hampshire – After the opening round of the 23rd annual New England Senior Amateur Championship at the Donald Ross-designed Mt. Washington Resort Golf Club three Mass Golfer players are close to reaching the top of the mountain by virtue of capturing their first win in the event.
In total, six Mass Golf players are among the nine lowest scorers after all shot 1-under or better within the field of 120 players. The second and final round begins at 8 on Wednesday morning.
Mass Golf Hall of Fame member Frank Vana, Jr. (Marlborough CC) shot 3-under-par 69, matching fellow Bay State players Andrew Falcone (Plymouth CC) and James Staffieri (Salem CC), plus Connecticut’s Bob Murphy. Vana, who won the Lowery Division of the 2020 Ouimet Memorial Tournament, sank six birdies, including three straight between holes 4-6. Vana, Falcone and Staffieri will tee off at 1:45 p.m.
Don Foberg (Plymouth CC), the 2019 Mass Super Senior Amateur champion, shot 2-under with six birdies to lead the Super Senior Division (65 and over). Jack Kearney (Westover GC) shot 1-under to trail Foberg in the division by a stroke. Kearney won the 2018 NEGA Senior Amateur and the 2019 Mass Senior Amateur.
Other Top 12 Bay State Competitors In The Field
John Carroll (Indian Ridge CC) and Keith Smith (Franklin CC) shot 2-over and 3-over, respectively, but both players made eagle on the 508-yard, par-5 sixth hole.
