BROCKTON, Massachusetts – Claude Hoopes (Kittansett Club) earned medalist honors by firing a 1-under-par 71 as 11 players advanced in the first qualifier for the Super Senior Amateur championship on Wednesday at Brockton CC. Now Hoopes, 70, has a chance for a historic sweep.
The Championship Proper, which is open to amateur golfers who have reached their 65th birthday and have a handicap not exceeding 12.0, has added a Legends Division this year for players aged 70+. Legends Division players like Hoopes will play from the same tees and have a chance to win the overall championship.
The 7th Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship will begin September 2 with the stroke play competition taking place at Blissful Meadows GC in Uxbridge. The Championship Proper will consist of two days of stroke play, with only the low 70 scorers and ties moving on to the second day.
In Wednesday’s qualifier, 11 players shot 6-over or better to make the cut.
Hoopes, a Marion native who finished runner-up in the first Super Senior Amateur in 2014, finished strongly on Wednesday by making birdie on the 14th, 15th and 17th holes. He also rallied despite a triple bogey on the par-4 5th hole.
Richard Ellis shot even par on his home course, finishing with birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th holes.
Fellow qualifiers Barry Higham (Swansea CC), Bill Kelly (Walpole CC) and Kevin Nery (CC of New Bedford) will all compete in the Championship Proper for the first time, having turned 65 this year. Higham shot 1-over, while Kelly and Nery finished 5-over and 6-over., respectively.
