for immediate release: October 17, 2018

MASHPEE, Massachusetts – The road to the 2018 Fall Cup season began last November and culminated in an exciting championship, which featured the winning cups competing for a state title on a beautiful day at Willowbend in Mashpee.

The Fall Cup program is a statewide tournament that features three matches played in September between Mass Golf Member Clubs. Teams of six females were broken into 19 regional Cups and enjoy spirited competition. The top team from each region following those three matches earned the right to compete in the Fall Cup Championship.

“The Fall Cup program was introduced to create an environment of team competition and camaraderie and this season exemplified that mission,” said Cathleen Beach, Mass Golf’s Director of Women’s Events & Player Development. “We had 19 Cups representing hundreds of woman golfers from across the state compete this fall which is just amazing. Today was a perfect way to cap off a tremendous season.”

When all scorecards had been turned in, it was the team from Presidents Golf Course which had captured the gross title with a score of 253. The six-player team finished eight strokes ahead of the teams from Framingham Country Club and Sagamore Spring Golf Club.

Representing Presidents Golf Course on this day were Carol Mather, Kathy Otterson, Mal Carson, Marijke Alsbach, Kim McDowell and Linda Goulet. Although Alsbach recorded the team’s low score for the day, which included a birdie on the 299-yard, par 4 15th hole, all competitors were within eight strokes of the team’s best score for what was a true team effort.

The team from Framingham was paced by its low scorer, Gail Galin, who carded a 79 to go along with strong performances also posted by teammates Mo Reilly, Pam Hulme, Lynne Johnson, Mary Jo Hamilton and Joan Guerrant.

Matching Framingham’s score was the team from Sagamore Spring Golf Club which was represented on Wednesday by Alice McElhinney, Barbara Horwood, Janet Kim, Terrance Durkin, Connie Hayton, and Donna Dileso.

The road to Presidents Golf Course’s first ever Fall Cup Championship title began in September when it competed against teams from Foxborough Country Club, William J. Devine Golf Course and Nehoiden Golf Course. Through three matches, the Quincy-based course earned three wins and 15 points to advance to the Fall Cup Championship.

Since the Fall Cup debut in 2009, only Cohasset Golf Club – winners in 2009 and 2011 – has won more than one title.

Also recognized in Mashpee on Wednesday was the team from Walpole Country Club which claimed the overall net division title with a score of 4-under par 206. The team finished two strokes ahead of Framingham Country Club and Sagamore Spring Golf Club. Charter Oak Country Club and The Ridge Club finished T3 with scores of even par 2010.

The Walpole Country Club team entered today’s Championship following a regular season which saw it compete against teams from Brae Burn Country Club, William J. Devine Golf Course and Belmont Country Club in Region 4. After collecting a Cup-high 17 points, the Walpole team moved on to Willowbend where it claimed the net title.

Representing Walpole Country Club in Mashpee were Jane Keaveney, Debbie Harvey, Lisa Dolan, Leslie Payne, Fran Caruso, and Julie Corcoran.
