FALMOUTH, Massachusetts – In what was the second to last Women’s Tournament of the Mass Golf season, the team of Mary Marengi and M.J. O’Neill combined to shoot a 3-under 69 to capture the 2018 Eleanor I. LaBonte Tournament at The Cape Club in Falmouth.

The duo, who both play out of the Golf Club at Turner Hill in Ipswich, combined to tally five birdies en route to the top spot on the leaderboard, edging the runner-up teams of both Chrisann Taras & Danielle Lee, as well Georgia Peirce and Robyn St. Clair, who each shot 1-over 73 in the 18-hole event. The victory marks the second straight win in the annual fall tournament for Marengi and O’Neill, who also won in 2017 at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley.

With a complete 120-player field, the better-ball four-ball event saw a complete effort from the team of O’Neill and Marengi on the Upper Cape Tuesday, who first used a Marengi birdie on the par-3 second hole to take an early lead on the board.

After recording back-to-back pars for the team on both the third and fourth holes, the North Shore duo continued to build on their lead with birdies on both the par-3 fifth hole and the par-4 seventh hole, respectively, and made the turn at 2-unuder 34.

On their second nine, after teeing off on the first hole in the shotgun-start format, Marengi and O’Neill quickly birdied the par-5 10th hole, which at 396 yards was the second longest hole of the event, to move to 3-under for the tournament.

Margeni, of Newbury, who was responsible for four of the team’s five birdies, collected their fifth and final birdie on the par-4 12th hole to move to 4-under for the day.

Following the 13th hole – the only hole where both competitors tallied bogeys, the team parred the remaining five holes to hold their spots atop the leaderboard.

Entries were open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club not exceeding 36.0.

The final Women’s Tournament of the 2018 season will be conducted at Westminster Country Club on October 22-23 for the Mildred Prunaret Cup.
