METHUEN, Massachusetts – On the third day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, being contested from September 12-14 at Plymouth Country Club, 16 competitors from Monday’s qualifier, held at Merrimack Valley Golf Course in Methuen, earned entrance into the Championship Proper.
An additional five competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
There was lots of red scorecards on Tuesday at Merrimack Valley GC as five of the 16 competitors to advance to the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship did so by shoot under par, including medalist James Staffieri (Indian Ridge CC), who shot a 3-under 67 en route to the top spot on the leaderboard.
The 58-year old Staffieri, of Windham, N.H., tallied a pair of birdies on both his front nine and his back nine Tuesday and will return to his first state Mid-Amateur championship since 2015. Previously, Staffieri has advanced in each of the past three Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championships, finishing as high as T17, a feat he accomplished last year.
In addition to Staffieri, fellow Indian Ridge CC member Michael Rattigan placed second at 2-under 68 while Christopher Brewer, Sam Parella and Jeff Weishaar all finished below par.
