NORTH DARTMOUTH, Massachusetts – On the fourth day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, being contested from September 12-14 at Plymouth Country Club, 18 competitors from Thursday’s qualifier, held at the Country Club of New Bedford in North Dartmouth, earned entrance into the Championship Proper.
An additional five competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
On Thursday, it was Plymouth Country Club’s Matt Miller who took the top-spot on the leaderboard, as the 41-year old from Hanover shot an even-par 70 over 18-holes to earn medalist honors and advance to next month’s Championship Proper. Miller, who most recently competed in the Massachusetts Amateur Championship in mid-July, birdied the par-4 second hole at the Country Club of New Bedford Thursday before tallying two of the same in the final three hole stretch of his round.
In addition to Miller, Thursday’s 18-qualifiers, the largest group to advance to the championship proper through this year’s sectional qualifiers, carded scores that ranged from Miller’s 70 to 6-over 76.
Amongst the competitors in Thursday’s qualifying field to advance include former state Amateur and Amateur Public Links champion, Ryan Riley, and former state Four-Ball champion, J.C. Guthrie.
