Savel's Ace Helps Earn Medalist Honors, Lead 10 to Mass Senior Championship - MASSGOLF

10 competitors qualify for Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship

WAYLAND, Massachusetts –  On the second day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship, being contested from September 25-26 at Pine Brook Country Club, 10 competitors from Tuesday’s qualifier, held at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, earned entrance into the Championship Proper.

An additional eight competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.

Led in part by an ace on the par-3 fifth hole, Concord’s Mark Savel (The Haven CC) shot an even-par 72 in the 18-hole qualifier at Sandy Burr Country Club, earning medalist honors and securing a spot into next month’s Championship Proper. Besides his ace, the 60-year old Savel opened up play with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and had back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to complete his round.

Savel was the first of 10 competitors to advance from Tuesday’s qualifier, with scores ranging from even-par 72 to 4-over 76.

UP NEXT
The 2018 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship will be contested at Pine Brook Country Club from September 25-26. Qualifying for the Championship Proper is scheduled to take place at four sites from August 7 to August 15. Additional qualifiers will be held on the following days:
