BUZZARDS BAY, Massachusetts – On the third day of qualifying for the 2018 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship, being contested from September 25-26 at Pine Brook Country Club, 11 competitors from Wednesday’s qualifier, held at Bay Pointe Club in Buzzards Bay, earned entrance into the Championship Proper.
An additional three competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot, earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
It was a pair of co-medalists who earned the top spot on the leaderboard Wednesday as both Stephen Molis (Pocasset GC) and Jimmy Grant (Bradford CC) carded matching 1-over par 71 in the 18-hole qualifier to lead the group of 74 who were in the field on Wednesday. The 69-year old Molis, of Cataumet, bounced back from a streak of three straight bogeys on his front nine by birdying the sixth and ninth hole, respectively, before birdying three of his final four holes to ascend up the leaderboard. Having last played in the Senior Amateur Championship in 2016, Molis has also been a regular in the Mass Golf Super Senior Championship since it was established in 2014.
Joining Molis in the top spot was Haverhill’s Jimmy Grant, who rebounded from two bogeys in his first three holes by shooting par or better on 14 of his next 15 holes to complete his round. The 60-year old Grant will be competing in his third straight Championship Proper, a run that included a T8 finish at Turner Hill in 2016.
The nine additional competitors who advanced from Wednesday’s qualifier had scores ranging from 2-over 72 to 4-over 74.
