Hunter Stone (Tedesco Country Club), Brian Higgins (Franklin Country Club) and Brandon Goold (Granite Links Golf Club) shared medalist honors at Hopkinton, each shooting a 1-over 72.

Higgins returns to the championship for the first time since 2019, when he competed in the first two rounds of stroke play but missed the cut for the final round. The Bellingham native shot a 34 on the front nine, including two birdies during his first three holes, to give himself a head start heading down the stretch.

For Goold, it was a back-nine 33 that propelled him into medalist position. Goold made a string of three birdies on holes 13-15 and finished with another birdie on the 18th hole. Stone also made birdie on the 425-yard, par-4 hole 18 to end in a tie for first place.

Close behind the medalists was Tyler Currie (Hillview Golf Course), who shot a 2-over 73 to finish in fourth place. Currie recorded a largely error-free round, finishing 15 holes at or below par.

The cutline fell at 4-over and 14 golfers advanced to the championship.

At Cranberry Valley, Stephen Quillinan (Renaissance) led the field of 13 qualifiers with an even-par 72. Quillinan, who played in the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, made birdie on holes 16 and 18 to propel himself to the top spot.

Ryan Brown (Cape Cod National Golf Club) will appear in his first Mass Mid-Amateur in his first year of eligibility, as the Harwich native turned 25 earlier this summer. The former Bryant University golfer carded three birdies to finish at 2-over. Bob Blackmar (Wachusett Country Club) also recorded three birdies to post a 2-over 74.

The cutline fell at 4-over 76.

Brett Pimental, who posted the third-best score in qualifying at Cranberry Valley, played in the 2018 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship. (David Colt, file)
