At Gardner, 15 golfers shot even-par 71 or better to advance to the Mass Open. Sean Magarian (Pleasant Valley Country Club) took home medalist honors with a 5-under 66 to secure his first appearance in the Mass Open. The Assumption University sophomore shot a 32 on the front nine and totaled seven birdies.

Close behind was Samuel Cody (Antrim, NH) with a bogey-free 4-under 67. He returns to the championship after he qualified as an alternate last year, and will try to make the cut this time around. At age 68, Bruce Carter (Green Hill Municipal Golf Course) secured his spot as the oldest player in the field after he shot 2-under 69 with strong 33 on the front nine .

In addition to Alex Xarras (Oak Hill Country Club), Assumption’s Jack Moy (Pleasant Valley Country Club), Hartford University’s Michael Amari (Northern Spy Golf Club), Franklin Pierce University’s Michael Sosik (Leominster, MA) and Bryant University commit Aiden Azevedo (MIAA) all finished 1-under. Moy and Sosik both played well on the front nine, with Moy recording a 33 and Sosik posting an eagle on hole 1 and a birdie on hole 2. Amari made birdie on the final hole and led the back nine with a 34, tied with Magarian and Cody for the best finish.

Jacob Hollander of Peterborough, New Hampshire, shot a 4-under 67 to secure the top spot among 16 qualifiers at Marlborough and earn medalist honors. The former University of Redlands standout got off to a strong start on the back nine with two straight birdies.

Daniel Brooks (Dudley Hill Golf Club) recorded a stretch of three consecutive birdies on the back nine to finish second with a 1-under 70. Brooks, who competes at Siena College, is a first-time Mass Open qualifier and was the 2019 New England Junior PGA Champion. Josh Biren (Pine Brook Country Club) and Brendan Peel (Potomac, MD) were the only other golfers to finish at or below par. The qualification marks Biren’s first appearance in the Mass Open since 2015 and Peel’s first overall.

Of the rest of the field, Max Hutter (Weston Golf Club), Blake Morris (Middlebury, CT), John Martinchek (Vernon, CT), and Daniel Woodbury (Pleasant Valley Country Club) are the only golfers who have previously qualified for the Open. The qualification is the second in a row for Hutter, who made the 36-hole cut for the first time last year.

Four players made it over the cutline at 4-over.

Eric Boulger (Walpole Country Club) and Connor Schmidt (Venetia, PA) each shot a 2-under 69. Schmidt, a former two-time Drexel University golf captain, made his move on the last nine holes, wrapping up with a 34 on the back nine after recording birdies on holes 15 and 16. Boulger, who just completed his first year at UConn, finished with three birdies and an eagle on hole 15.

Former Colgate University standout Alejandro Soto (TPC Boston) made birdie on three of the final four holes to get in with a 1-under 70.

Alan Smith (Crumpin-Fox Club), Daniel Morgan (Amherst, MA), Mariano Medico (Shavertown, PA), Jonathan Pannone (Warwick, RI), and Michael Sweeney (Port St. Lucie, FL) made birdie on the 18th to qualify on the number.
