Qualifying for the final Mass Golf championship event of the season began this week at Bradford Country Club in Haverhill and Country Club of Greenfield, with several senior hopefuls trying to earn a spot in the Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship.
The 9th annual Mass Super Senior Amateur Championship will take place October 3-4 at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown. Entries are open to amateur golfers who have reached their 65th birthday by October 3, 2022, and who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index not exceeding 12.0 (at the time of registration).
On Tuesday at Bradford Country Club, nine players advanced to the Championship Proper, with the cutline finishing a 12-over 83. Danny Brown, of Vesper Country Club, led all qualifiers with a 6-over 77, knocking in a birdie on the par-4 15th to help put him in Championship Proper for the first time. Aram Hintlian (Brae Burn Country Club) is in for the sixth consecutive year, shooting a 7-over 78.
First-time qualifiers include Glen Watson (Hickory Hill Golf Course), Albert Bisceglia (Wachusett Country Club), and James Bradford (Indian Pond Country Club). Robert Wight (Salem CC) made the cut for the seventh time, thanks to birdies on holes 12 and 14.
On Wednesday at Country Club of Greenfield, Steve Hallquist (Amherst Golf Club) shot a 3-under 33 on his opening nine (back nine) with three birdies to earn medalist honors with a 1-under 71. This will be his first appearance in the Championship Proper, as it is for Gary Mattesen (Oak Ridge Golf Club), who shot an even-par 72 with an eagle on the par-5 8th, followed by two birdies on the back nine.
After withdrawing last year, Jim Hosey (Ludlow Country Club) is back in the Championship Proper after shooting 2-over 74 with a birdie on the final hole.
Sam Lussier (Amherst Golf Club), who at 81 was the oldest player in the qualifier, shot 6 strokes below his age, as his 3-over 75 got him back in the championship for the first time since 2019.
Overall, 15 people qualified at Greenfield, making the cut at 5-over 77 or better. Tom Burr (Green Hill Golf Course) made birdie on the final hole as he was one of four players to get in on the number.
