A Historic Week For Mass Amateur Qualifying - MASSGOLF

55 Golfers Qualify For the Mass Amateur Championship, Including First-Ever Female Molly Smith

For Immediate Release: June 8, 2023

More than one-third of the field earned a spot in this year’s Massachusetts Amateur Championship, among them the first known female in the event’s 115-year history.

Molly Smith (Vesper Country Club) fired a 1-over 73 at Andover Country Club on Tuesday, making her one of 55 players to advance to the 144-player championship, taking place July 10-14 at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea. The incoming first-year at University of Central Florida (UCF), has been playing stellar golf this season. She narrowly missed a qualifying spot in U.S. Open Local Qualifying and was involved in an alternate playoff. On Wednesday, Smith made a charge in U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying where she shot a two-round total of 3-under.

Other notables to qualify include 2021 U.S. Senior Open competitor Jim Patterson (Orchards GC), 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur competitor Alex Landry (Indian Ridge Country Club), 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur competitor Eric Tidman (Worcester Country Club) and 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur competitor Glen Sutton (Belmont Country Club).
