17 Players Advance To 115th Mass Amateur Championship - MASSGOLF

Another 17 Golfers Qualify For the Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Oak Hill & Olde Barnstable

With the start of the 115th Massachusetts Amateur Championship now less than a month away, 17 more individuals guaranteed a spot on the player’s list for the Championship Proper at Essex County Club.

On Tuesday, eight players advanced through qualifying at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg, while nine more advanced Thursday at Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds on Cape Cod.

This year’s Mass Amateur is open to amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4 (at the time of registration). Entrants must also have played and posted five rounds at any Mass Golf member club/course within 12 months of the entry close date.

At Oak Hill, the 2021 NEPGA Jr. Tour Player of the Year Michael Matheson (Walpole Country Club) finished with a score of 3-under-par 67. Despite a triple-bogey on the 15th, Matheson had an eagle on the 10th and finished with birdies on holes 17 and 18. Oak Hill member Zach Bingham shot 69, matching 2002 Mass Amateur finalist Brian Higgins (Franklin Country Club) and Paul Burke (Indian Ridge Country Club). Belmont Hill School golf coach Charlie Doar (The Country Club) also snuck into the field with a 1-over 72.

At Olde Barnstable, Belmont Hill School golf captain C.J. Winchenbaugh (Oyster Harbors Club) shot a bogey-free 3-under 68 to share medalist honors with former pro Phil Dinan (Sacconnesset Golf Club). Kevin Gately (Harmon Golf), who played in U.S. Open Final Qualifying, started with a bogey but made four consecutive birdies after the turn to finish 2-under 69. Brian Bassett (Oyster Harbors Club) made birdie on the 18th to make it in above the cutline at 1-over 72.
