30 Players Lock Up Spots In Mass Amateur Through Final Week Of Qualifying
As June rolls on, so does qualifying for the 118th Massachusetts Amateur Championship, set to take place July 6-10 at Winchester Country Club. The final four qualifying events took place this week at Brockton Country Club, Bear Hill Golf Club, North Andover Country Club, and Framingham Country Club, with 30 players combined guaranteeing their spot in the Championship Proper.
The Mass Amateur will feature 36 holes of stroke play, followed by the best 32 scorers advancing to match play. The event is open to amateur golfers with an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.6.
This week’s qualifying would start Monday at Brockton and Bear Hill, both nine-hole clubs that celebrated their 125th anniversaries last year. On Monday at Brockton, John McCarthy (Furnace Brook Golf Club) shot 6-under 66, including two eagles to earn medalist. Not far behind him, shooting 5-under, was Kevin Gately (Pembroke Country Club), who would birdie hole Nos. 5, 6 and 8 both times around. Five additional players made it in on the cutline at 2-under 68.
At Bear Hill, Billy Connell (USGA/Mass Golf GC) would finish as leader with a 2-under performance, which included a 3-under first nine. Winchester member Jake Peer, a former Holy Cross golfer, would punch his ticket to his home club, storming back with a three-under performance on the second nine. Sean Savage, also of Winchester, shot 35 on each trip around Bear Hill to finish above the cutline.

On Tuesday at North Andover GC, medalist went to Matt Tramonte (Long Meadow Golf Club), who shot 1-over with three birdies. Tom Labrecque (Crystal Lake Golf Club) would overcome five bogeys or worse to make the cut with a 2-over 70. Salem Country Club senior standout Kevin Daly, 57, also shot 70 to advance.
On Thursday at Framingham CC, host of the 2024 Mass Amateur, Framingham member Kyle Tibbetts shot 30 on the back nine en route to a 5-under 67 to lead nine qualifiers by a mile. Junior standouts Quinn Dumas (Franklin Country Club) and Ryan Kelley (Worcester Country Club) each made birdie on the par-5 18th to make it above the cutline at 2-over. Emil Nielsen (Weston Golf Club), who recently earned a spot in U.S. Amateur Final Qualifying, shot 1-under to advance.
