55 Advance To Amateur Public Links Championship In Final Wave Of Qualifying
The Berkshires are calling, and the field for one of Mass Golf’s most anticipated championships each year is nearly ready to answer.
After 55 players combined advanced to the three qualifying events at Hyannis Golf Course, Chicopee Country Club and Gannon Municipal Golf Course, the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship will return to Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown on August 17–18 for the first time since 2016.
Entries are open to amateur golfers who hold an active Mass Golf Membership at a public golf course or a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week, and who have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0 at the time of registration.
On Wednesday July 15 at Hyannis Golf Course, Holly Ridge Golf Club superintendent Matt Cornuet made three birdies and led the way at 2-under-par 69, as 26 advanced, including 13 players who finished tied for the final spots above the cutline at 5-over 76. Matthew Bailey (George Wright Golf Course) shot a bogey-free 1-under 70. Brian Faherty (Olde Scotland Links) shook off an early triple bogey and went bogey-free 1-under on the back nine to be among the half of the qualifiers who shot 76.
On Tuesday at Chicopee Country Club, Keith Burch (Crumpin-Fox Club) made three birdies en route to a 1-under 70, with Tyler Cleary, who eagled the par-5 2nd en route to a 71, leading 16 individuals who earned a spot. At age 70, Al Alminas (Franconia/Veterans Golf Course) also earned his spot with a 75. As the youngest in the field, 16-year-old Jacob Hillman, the son of Taconic Golf Club head golf professional Josh Hillman, knocked down five birdies to finish with a 72.
On Wednesday at Gannon Municipal Golf Course, 13 players finished above the cutline led by Mark Fusco (Bayberry Hills / Bass River), who made eagle on the par-5 15th to shoot 1-over-par 71. Three Gannon members also advanced, as Thomas McGee and Michael Bono finished with a 74, one ahead of Travis Ryan. Lucas Dascoli (Mount Hood Golf Club), who made an ace in this year’s Mass Amateur at Winchester Country Club, shot a 35 on his second nine (Nos. 1-9) and got in with a 74. Shane Hayes (Granite Links Golf Club) made a clutch birdie on the 574-yard, par-5 18th to qualify on the number with a 76.
