33 Advance In Final Wave Of Mass Amateur Qualifying - MASSGOLF

Full Field Will Soon Be Set For 113th Massachusetts Amateur At Brae Burn Country Club

NORTON, Massachusetts – The final qualifying rounds for the 113th Massachusetts Amateur Championship have been completed. In the final three events this week, 33 players total made the cut to advance to the Championship Proper, taking place July 13-17 at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton.

Eligible players must be amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index with a Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4.

The full field, starting times, and the list of alternates will be released at a later date.

In the Captains Golf Club (Starboard) qualifier on Monday in Brewster, Dan Howard (Norfolk Golf Club) and Bill Argus (Wollaston Golf Club) led nine qualifiers by shooting a 1-under-par 71. Howard made birdie on five of his first eight holes and en route to qualifying for the third time in four years. Ryan Riley (Thorny Lea GC), the 2011 Mass Amateur champion, also qualified with a 1-over 73, as did Joe Walker (Dennis Pines Golf Club) the 2012 Senior Amateur champion, with a 2-over 74.

In the Vesper Country Club qualifier on Monday in Tyngsborough, nine more players qualified for the Championship Proper. Mac Lee (Andover Country Club), who recently finished his first year at Boston College, was one of four players to shoot 1-under 71. Mark O’Sullivan (Framingham Country Club), Sean Fitzpatrick (George Wright Golf Course), and Nick Fantasia (Mount Pleasant Golf Club) also shot 71. James Robbins (Renaissance) finished with five birdies and made the cut at 2-over, despite a triple bogey on hole 11 and a bogey on the 18th.

On Tuesday, the 10th and final qualifier for the Mass Amateur took place at Fall River Country Club, with 15 players earning the final guaranteed spots. Cooper Griffin (Woodland Golf Club) earned medalist honors with a 2-under 68, as he made three birdies on the back nine and then added an eagle on the 540-yard, par-5 2nd hole, plus three birdies on the back nine. Spencer Dumas (Franklin Country Club), a high school standout at Xaverian Brothers, was among three finishers at 1-under. He will also make his Mass Amateur debut this year, as will Matthew Michaud (South Shore Country Club), one of seven players to make the cut at 2-over.
