Curtin is back in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur for the second straight year as she made par on the first nine holes, and clinched her spot with her lone birdie on the par-5 17th hole.

“Today’s round was steady as she goes,” said Curtin, whose currently leading the Mass Golf Women’s Senior Player of the Year Award race. “The course played long which I think played to my advantage.”

This will be the second USGA event of the year for Curtin, who played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball this past spring in Puerto Rico. However, she also had a strong performance in the R&A Women’s Amateur overseas, plus a top finish in the Senior Division of the New England Women’s Amateur.

In recent weeks, she’s had her son James tag along, as a caddie and also a teammate, winning the Mother Son Modified Scotch Tournament for the 10th consecutive year last week.

“It was great having my son James on the bag,” Curtin said. “He knows my game well and he is really easy going. Helped me stay focused and kept it light.”

Martin, the 2008 Mass Girls’ Junior Amateur winner and a former New Hampshire state champion in high school, felt right at home in the Granite State.

The former University of Richmond golfer found herself 3-over after a double-bogey on the 6th hole, but she answered with a birdie on the next hole and made the turn at 2-over. Martin birdied the final par-3 of the day on the 16th to get to 3-over and finished her round 4-over.
