As the Town of Foxborough prepares for a busy stretch of major sporting events, including playoff football and this summer’s FIFA World Cup, Foxborough Country Club is charting its own future with championship golf on the horizon.
Over the next several seasons, the club will welcome a lineup of significant events to the statewide golf community, beginning this summer with its first Ouimet Memorial Tournament and building toward a signature moment with the club’s first Massachusetts Open Championship in 2032.
“Foxborough Country Club is a demanding layout for championship golf, and we’re proud that Mass Golf has selected us to host two of its most storied events,” said club president David Connolly. “Foxborough has shared a close relationship with Mass Golf for more than 70 years and hosting these events will not only add to our club’s rich competitive history but also inspire future generations of members to strive to compete with the best.”

Foxborough Country Club will host the first two rounds of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament on July 29–30, followed by the championship’s final round being contested as is tradition at Woodland Golf Club in Newton. The 54-hole, invitation-only event is the state’s lone championship that brings together Massachusetts’ top men’s and women’s amateurs at the height of the summer season. The tournament features Championship, Lowery (Senior), and Women’s Divisions, with invitations earned through performances in Mass Golf, New England Golf Association, United States Golf Association, and other regional competitions.
Established in 1968, one year after the passing of Francis Ouimet, the tournament was founded by Ouimet’s friends at Woodland, the first club where he held membership. Ouimet’s enduring legacy in Massachusetts golf is forever linked to his iconic amateur victory at the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club.
Looking further ahead, Foxborough Country Club will reach a couple milestones in 2032. In addition to marking 75 years since the course opened for play in 1957, the club will host the Massachusetts Open for the first time. First played in 1905, the Massachusetts Open is Mass Golf’s lone professional championship and one of the oldest continuously contested open championships in the country. The 54-hole stroke-play event features a $75,000 purse and attracts a competitive mix of PGA Tour Americas players, mini-tour professionals, and elite amateurs.
In between the two championships, there will be multiple one-day events for Mass Golf, USGA and New England Golf Association (NEGA) competition taking place.
Foxborough Country Club future events:
The course (6,849 yards, par-72) is defined less by length and more by angles, elevation change, and greens that demand constant attention to detail. Many holes reward a shaped tee shot, often favoring a controlled draw or fade to open up downhill or partially blind approaches. The 7th stands out as a risk-reward test: a short dogleg right where players must choose between a conservative layup or an aggressive line over the trees for a flip wedge or putt.
Each nine ends with a lengthy par 5s, both playing left to right. The 9th (538 yards) features an uphill, blind second shot, while the 18th (518 yards) is scorable, however, is guarded in front by two large bunkers to a green that typically runs away from the hole.
Over the years, Foxborough has staged several championships and events. In 2022, the club hosted U.S. Open Local Qualifying, the first stage of play to determine who would advance to that year’s U.S. Open at The Country Club.
Its most recent championship took place in 2021 when the club co-hosted the Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship with Walpole Country Club, which will host the 2029 Mass Open. Steve Tasho (Thorny Lea Golf Club) and Keith Smith (Franklin Country Club) took home the 2021 Senior Four-Ball title via Smith chipping in for birdie off the back lip of the fringe on the 18th at Foxborough.
In recent years, the club also hosted Mass Open qualifying (2023) and Mass Amateur qualifying (2024). It also held the 2010 Mass Junior Amateur, won by Andy Mai (The Ranch Golf Club), who went on to play for Boston College.

Foxborough Country Club was incorporated on July 18, 1955, following an ambitious idea that emerged from the Foxboro Company’s employee four-ball golf league in the early 1950s. As golf’s popularity surged and tee times became scarce, local golfers joined by those from neighboring towns began exploring the possibility of building a course of their own. After research and consultation with area clubs, the group acquired a 90-acre tract of rolling terrain in South Foxborough, where noted architect Geoffrey Cornish was selected to design the course.
Under the leadership of the club’s first president, Claude Young, construction of the original nine holes began with help from private contractors, though much of the demanding labor was performed by a dedicated volunteer group affectionately known as the “Rock Pickers.” The original nine, played in the order of today’s 1, 16, 17, 18, 10, 6, 7, 8, and 9, opened for play in 1957.
A second nine holes, also designed by Cornish and largely constructed by the firm of Hall and Lindsey of New York, completed the 18-hole layout recognized today, which opened in 1971. In the years that followed, Foxborough Country Club continued to evolve through a series of significant improvements, including an expanded driving range, a tee restoration project, and a modern irrigation system. More recently, the club rebuilt the 5th green and the stone wall that lines the pond guarding the 16th green.
