The first four qualifiers for the 118th Massachusetts Amateur Championship took place this week at Westover Golf Course, Northern Spy Golf Club, Fall River Country Club, and The Cape Club.
The Championship Proper will be held at Winchester Country Club from July 6-10. After 36 holes of stroke play, the top 32 scorers will advance to match play. The event is open to amateur golfers with an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.6.
On Tuesday at Westover GC in Ludlow, Taylor Fontaine (Worcester Country Club) led six qualifiers with a medalist score of 6-under, three strokes ahead of anyone else in the field. His day would be highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th hole. Hampshire Regional’s Brayden Fennessey would punch his ticket with a 3-under finish that included a birdie on his final hole to take sole possession of 2nd. Former Westover club champion Michael Murray shot a bogey-free two under that featured a eagle on the par-5 4th hole.
At Northern Spy, Chris Pickreign (Shaker Hills Country Club), Adrian Daigle, (Nashawtuc Country Club), and Maxx Zides (USGA/Mass Golf GC) all shot a 1-under 69 for shared possession of 1st place. Another notable round would belong to Ryan Whitehead (Charter Oak Country Club) where he had a bogey free back nine to qualify with a 70.
Fall River was host for the final qualifier on Tuesday as Eric Tankanow (Pleasant Valley Country Club) and Michael Hunsinger (Fall River CC) each shot 1-over 71 to share the top spot. Conor McCormack (Woodland Golf Club), co-winner of the Mass Mixed Four-Ball, snuck in with a birdie on the par-4 18th to move to a 3-over and punch his ticket to Winchester. Mason Bowie (The International) also shot 73, aided by an eagle on the par-5 10th hole.
The only group to compete Wednesday would be the ones teeing off at The Cape Club of East Falmouth. Former Holy Cross golfer Matthew Williams (Boston Golf Club) would have one of the more memorable shots of the day, chipping in to make the cut on the par-5 18th hole to finish 1-over 73. Another strong ending would come from the day’s medalist Sam Jenkins (Plymouth Country Club), who made birdie on the 18th to take sole possession of 1st with his 1-under 71. Michael Martin (Stockbridge Golf Club) would punch his ticket after catching fire on the back nine with a 3-under performance to make the cut at 2-over 74.
