The first four qualifiers for the 116th Massachusetts Open Championship took place this week, with 53 golfers combined guaranteeing their place through events held at Kernwood Country Club, Walpole Country Club, Ocean Edge Resort, and Black Rock Country Club.
The Championship Proper will take place June 9-11 at Oyster Harbors Club, returning to the classic Donald Ross on Cape Cod for the first time since 1942. Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.
James Driscoll (Charles River Country Club), a two-time Mass Amateur winner and past low amateur in the Mass Open, was among 11 players to qualify Monday at Walpole, making eagle on the par-5 4th to shoot 1-over-par 72. Bryant standout Chad Correia (Ledgemont Country Club) knocked down four birdies to lead the way at 1-under 70. Walpole member Joey Nee made an eagle on 15 and birdie on 16 to make it above the cut with a 75, as did Peter McCracken (Charles River Country Club), who sank a birdie on the 11th and made consecutive circles on holes 13-15.
At Kernwood on Monday, former Holy Cross standout Jake Peer (Winchester Country Club) led 15 qualifiers by shooting 2-over 72 with four birdies. Sean Dully, son of Kernwood’s Head PGA Professional Frank Dully, shot 74, matching Philip Doyle, of The Country Club. Oyster Harbors member John Lazor made a clutch birdie on the par-3 17th and was among seven players to qualify on the cutline with a score of 76. Joey Monahan (Winchester Country Club), the 2023 Massachusetts Young Golfers’ Amateur winner, and Colin Brennan (Indian Ridge Country Club), the 2017 Mass Mid-Amateur winner got into the field with a 76.
New Hampshire teaching professional Nick Antonelli (Atkinson Resort & Country Club) recorded the top score Wednesday at Ocean Edge, who made birdie on the 18th to finish even-par 72, one stroke ahead of URI’s Aidan O’Donovan (Cummaquid Golf Club) and senior standout Todd Ezold (Springfield Country Club). Followed closely behind at 75 were high schoolers Aiden Donath (Sassamon Trace Golf Course), Jude McColgan (Nashawtuc Country Club), and Patrick Dalton. Brendan Hunter (Red Tail Golf Club), the 2016 Mass Amateur winner, got in on the cutline at 76 along with UConn’s Matthew Oliveira (The Bay Club), who made birdie on the 18th to earn his spot.
On Thursday, Black Rock member and Lehigh standout Drew Golden shot 2-under 69 at his own course, matching Harvard’s Reese Jensen (Duxbury Yacht Club) and 17-year-old Wellesley native Doran Gibbs (Student Member/MIAA) to lead 12 qualifying players. Jensen made birdie on the 4th and 5th and made par the rest of the way. Longtime Mass Golf competitions Mike Calef (Pine Oaks Golf Club) and Herbie Aikens (Old Sandwich Golf Club), both past Mass Mid-Amateur winners, also advanced by shooting 70. Jared Winiarz (Segregansett Country Club), Mass Golf’s Member Services Coordinator, shot 41 on the front nine but rallied back with a 31 on the back to qualify on the number at 1-over 72.
