This week, the final two qualifiers for the 116th Massachusetts Open Championship took place at Orchards Golf Club and Country Club of Pittsfield with players competing over 18 holes to punch their ticket to Oyster Harbors Club. Each event guaranteed the top 11 plus ties, a spot in this year’s Open.
The Championship Proper will take place June 9-11 at Oyster Harbors Club, returning to the classic Donald Ross on Cape Cod for the first time since 1942. Entries are open to professional golfers and also amateur golfers who have an active USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4 (at the time of registration) or who have completed their handicap certification.

Thomas Hurley (Sandwich Hollows Golf Club), who plays college golf for Drew University, carded a 1-under 69, splitting medalist honors with Vermont pro and former New England Amateur winner Jared Nelson (Rutland, VT) at The Orchards, as they led 16 names who earned a tee time at Oyster Harbors next month. Evan Harmeling (TPC Boston), the 2013 Mass Open winner and current Korn Ferry Tour pro, earned his way in by shooting 3-over 73 to return to the event he won over a decade prior. Amateur Markus Pierre (The Kittansett Club), a Ouimet Scholar and president of the UMass Amherst golf club, made it in with an even-par 70, matching Georgetown standout Carson Erick (Boston Golf Club). UConn’s Matthew Costello (Segregansett Country Club), who will join Nelson and Erick in U.S. Open Final Qualifying, also advanced with a score of 3-over.
Brookline native James Imai (KOHR Golf), the 3-time Mass Junior Amateur winner who was 2nd in the 2024 Mass Open, shot 5-under 66 to be among 14 qualifiers on Thursday at Country Club of Pittsfield. His score was only bested by a 65 from Chris Wiatr (Juno Beach, Florida), who finished T3 in the 2024 Mass Open. Collin McMahon-Shea (Nashawtuc Country Club), a Davidson College standout, knocked down seven birdies for a 67, advanced along with Oyster Harbors member Alan Rose, who shot 69. Kyle Gallo, the 2011 Mass Open champion, shot 69 to move on, with Pittsfield member Josh Shepard and Oyster Harbors member Jeremy Bershak making the cut with seven other players who carded 70.
