First Week Of Mid-Amateur Qualifying Wraps Up - MASSGOLF

Mid-Amateur Qualifying Begins with 57 players moving on to the Championship Proper

NORTON, Massachusetts – The qualifying season for the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship began this week, as Westover Golf Club, The Cape Club of Sharon and Cape Cod Country Club all hosted the first round of qualifying events for the 2020 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, set to take place September 8-10 at GreatHorse.

At Westover on Tuesday, 24 spots into the Mid-Am were earned, with Damon Lusk (Meadow Brook GC) and Samuel Russell (George Wright GC) leading the way after they both fired a 3-under-par 69. Lusk rolled in four birdies with only one bogey, while Russell tallied an eagle and five birdies, while falling back just slightly with four bogeys. A.J. Oleksak, a member of Greathorse, shot a 2-under 70.

At The Cape Club of Sharon on Tuesday, Brandon Parker (Worcester CC), Mark O’Sullivan (Framingham CC) and Edward Newland (Boston GC) all paced the field by shooting an even-par 72. Rounding out the top five were Brian Higgins (Franklin CC) and Andrew Gildea (Olde Scotland Links). Higgins and Gildea both cruised to a 1-over 73 at Sharon, with Higgins making one birdie and two bogeys on the day while Gildea rolled in five birdies, coupled with three bogeys and a triple.

Andrew DiRamio, who qualified for match play at this year’s 112th Mass Amateur, will play in this year’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

On Wednesday at Cape Cod Country Club in Falmouth, Matt Montt (Plymouth CC) earned medalist honors with a 4-under par 67 that included seven birdies. The back nine was where Montt really cemented himself, as he birdied holes 10-13 and also 15 to shoot a 30 on the back nine.

Davis Mullany (Wyantenuck CC) and Derek Schug (Plymouth CC) also qualified, shooting 2-under and 1-under, respectively. Mullany rolled in six birdies, while Schug added four on his card. Rounding out the top five were five players tied for fourth at even par, including Mass Amateur Match Play qualifier Andrew DiRamio (North Hill CC).

DiRamio tallied five total birdies on his card, a 1-under 35 on the front nine while he dropped one on the back with a 1-over 36.
