NORTON, Massachusetts (July 30, 2026) – Mass Golf announced Thursday that Pocasset Golf Club, a century-old Donald Ross design located about five miles south of the Bourne Bridge, will host the Massachusetts Open Championship for the first time in 2028.
The selection continues a recent Cape Cod stretch for the championship. Following stops at Willowbend, Sacconnesset Golf Club and Oyster Harbors Club over the past three years, Pocasset will soon join the list of the region’s clubs that have hosted Mass Golf’s lone professional championship.
Pocasset opened its first nine holes for play in 1917. Donald Ross was retained around that time to oversee the development of the full 18-hole layout, shaping a course whose rolling terrain, green fairways and cooling sea breezes earned it recognition as the “best course on Cape Cod” from several observers in 1924.
The course golfers encounter today occupies a somewhat different piece of Pocasset than the original. Built across old farmland, it once extended west of the railroad tracks and across Shore Road toward Hen Cove. The elimination and combination of several holes, including the old second and third, eventually brought the entire layout inland and east of the tracks, which stretch along the coast of Buzzards Bay.
Since Pocasset became a private club in 1989, its membership has continued to invest in the course while preserving its Ross identity. Improvements have included additional bunkering along the 18th fairway, a modern irrigation system and a new golf shop. More recently, noted Ross specialist Ron Forse has guided a series of renovations, including the addition of a fairway bunker on the fourth hole that helps frame the line of sight for its uphill approach.
This project is part of a broader series of improvements at the club, including a full tee and bunker renovation. A complete renovation of the driving range is also underway, followed by the final phase, a new short-game area scheduled for completion by the start of the 2027 season. The work will leave the club’s practice facilities and golf course fully refreshed well before the Massachusetts Open arrives the following year.
Now measuring 6,542 yards and playing to a par of 72, Pocasset has welcomed several Mass Golf championships over the past five decades. Its résumé includes the 1989 Massachusetts Senior Amateur, the 2011 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur and the 2019 Women’s Stroke Play Championship for the Baker Trophy, won by Pocasset member Hannah Ghelfi. Former PGA Tour pro Jeff Lewis, who was raised in neighboring Sandwich and once earned the moniker “King of the Mini-tours”, is also among the notable figures who have called Pocasset home.
