The first week of qualifying for the 66th Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship began this week with 37 players advancing to the field, including one who made a clutch hole-in-one to qualify on the number.
Both fields were vying for a spot to compete at the historic Belmont Country Club for the first time September 22-23. Belmont, designed by Donald Ross and later redesigned by his associate Orrin Smith, has hosted five Mass Opens, four Mass Amateurs and six Mass Women’s Amateurs. It also hosted the 2015 Senior Players Championship, the second of three straight wins by Bernhard Langer.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers aged 55 or older as of Sept. 22, 2026, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0.
On Monday at Meadow Brook, Greg Badger (Salem Country Club) birdied the par-3 7th both times around to post an even-par 72, advancing alongside his fellow 2026 Mass Senior Four-Ball champion Kevin MacIntyre (Salem Country Club), who closed with a second-nine 34 to shoot 74. Tom O’Brien also had a pair of 2s on par-3s to finish at even par and qualify for the first time, and Chris McCarthy (Bass Rocks Golf Club) was bogey-free on the second nine to shoot 73.
Former Princeton golf captain Ignacio Fanlo (Hyannisport Club) was among five players to qualify on the number with a 76. Fanlo made a key birdie on the 7th the second time around, while Meadow Brook’s Kevin Johnson made must-make birdies on the last two holes to sneak into the field.
On Thursday at Bass River, 55-year-old Rich Manning (Harmon Golf) led 23 qualifying players by shooting 2-under-par 70 with five birdies on the front nine to earn his first Senior Amateur spot. Former major league pitcher Mike Trombley (The Club at New Seabury), also a former Mass Senior Four-Ball winner, made consecutive birdies on Nos. 3 & 4 and 14 & 15 to shoot 74.
The day’s most memorable finish, however, belonged to Westwood’s Jeff Fisher (Bear Hill Golf Club), who aced the 204-yard par-3 16th and followed it with a birdie on No. 17. That late surge helped him shoot 76—one of 10 players to land exactly on the qualifying number. Paul Mitchell (George Wright Golf Course) also made birdie on the last two holes for a 76.
