mass golf season kicks off with spring teams

For Immediate Release: MARCH 21, 2018

NORTON, Massachusetts – With the beginning of the active handicap season less than two weeks away, Mass Golf has announced its list of 2018 Spring Team Cups, whose matches begin on April 26. For the 2018 season, Mass Golf will feature 25 different cups with a six clubs assigned to each cup in what is one of the most popular women’s golf events in the Northeast.

This season, the statewide tournament will consist of five matches being played on five Thursdays in April and May between Mass Golf member clubs teams. This year’s format will consist of individual head-to-head match play using full handicaps and will feature a total of 102 different member clubs participating in this year’s Spring Team Cups.

“We are very excited to announce the list of Spring Team Cups for the upcoming season,” said Cathleen Beach, Mass Golf’s Director of Women’s Events & Player Development. “In past years, when Spring Team Cups were under the tutelage of the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts, this event was one of the most popular of the season and now that it is under the direction of Mass Golf, we are thrilled to be able to showcase it those who may not have been familiar with it.”

Beach explains that Mass Golf is looking to expand on all Women’s Cups in 2019, so she encourages any interested golfers to contact her directly (you can reach Cathleen at cbeach@massgolf.org) or reach out to one’s golf pro. As a result of the merger between the Massachusetts Golf Association and Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts earlier this year, all female golfers who hold an up-to-date Mass Golf/USGA GHIN handicap index are eligible to compete. In the past, only female golfers who were members at WGAM clubs could participate.

“Spring and Fall Cup teams are typically organized by the golf pro or a designated chairperson at the club,” said Beach. “We want to spread the word far and wide that any female golfer can now take part in this program. We hope to see an even bigger increase in participation in 2019 once people are aware of the opportunity.”

Similar to past years, each team from this year’s Spring Team Cup Matches will consist of five players from the same member club with a handicap index not exceeding 36.0 who have posted five 18-hole scores during the 2017 golf season. With six teams in each cup, each team will face a different opponent from the same cup once.

In addition to the season opening matches being held at clubs on April 26, Spring Team Cup matches are scheduled to be played on May 3, May 10, May 17 and May 24. While 102 different member clubs are represented, several clubs have more than one team competing.

President’s GC, The Country Club, Oakley CC, Salem CC, William J. Devine GC, CC of New Bedford and Dedham C&PC all lead the Spring Team Matches with three different teams competing while 40 Mass Golf member clubs will have two teams represented in this year’s Spring Team Cup matches.

A complete list of each cup was recently sent to team captains and be viewed by viewing the Spring Team Cup section under the Play Tab at MassGolf.org.
