The final stretch of qualifying for Mass Golf’s 2026 championships began this week as 23 golfers advanced to the Super Senior Amateur Championship through the three, 18-hole events contested over the past two weeks. The Braintree qualifier was set to take place Tuesday, September 1 but was rescheduled to Thursday, September 10.
The Championship Proper is set to take place September 29-30 at Country Club of Pittsfield, marking the Super Senior’s return to the Berkshires for the first time since Taconic hosted in 2022. Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers aged 65 or older as of Sept. 29, 2026, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 12.0.
On Wednesday at Olde Scotland, Foxborough Country Club’s Mark Grant knocked down four birdies to lead the way with a score of 1-under-par 71. Close behind was former Kittansett Club president Duncan Gratton, who finished at even-par. Joe LeRoy (Indian Pond Country Club) made 17 consecutive pars to shoot 73, while James Staffieri (Salem Country Club) shot 35 on the front nine en route to a 75.
Fellow qualifiers Ignacio Fanlo (Hyannisport Club), Douglas Smith (South Shore Country Club), Jeff Johnson (Barnstable Golf), Dan Casey (Woodland Golf Club) and were among those who just turned 65 and became newly-eligible for the tournament. Meanwhile, Wayne Burgess (Long Meadow Golf Club) made birdie on the 18th to qualify on the cutline at 8-over 80.
