With a history dating back to 1896, Wyantenuck Country Club has seen its share of championship golf. In an announcement made Wednesday, the club will add to its storied past in hosting the 2026 Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship and the 2029 Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship. As part of the agreement, Wyantenuck will also host a pair of USGA and Mass Golf Qualifying events.
The club and its members have shown a commitment in continuing to support golf in Massachusetts, especially amateur golf, with the announcement of these events. The 2029 Women’s Amateur will mark the third time the club has been selected to host one of Massachusetts’ coveted signature championships. In 2002 Wyantenuck hosted the Women’s Amateur and saw 17-year-old Kelly Robb become the youngest champion in the history of the event. Several years later, the 2011 Massachusetts Amateur was contested in Great Barrington for the first time. In that event Ryan Riley knocked off defending champion John Hadges in an early round matchup before defeating Frank Vana, Jr. 4 & 3 to become the Amateur Champion.
Past Mass Golf Signature Events Hosted at Wyantenuck CC
Wyantenuck Country Club is one of just two Massachusetts courses with famed architect C.B. Macdonald’s fingerprints upon it. Charles Banks, a prolific associate of Macdonald & Seth Raynor, is credited with renovating the golf course which was originally designed by Robert Pryde in 1913. Dedham Country & Polo Club, a Seth Raynor design, is the other.
The course features a 6,500 yard parkland layout which climbs up and down a hillside on the outward nine. The closing stretch plays out-and-back in more of links style layout. The course is known for its consistent and high level of conditioning championed by a long tenured greens staff.
Other Recent Massachusetts & New England Championships Hosted at Wyantenuck CC
Wyantenuck Country Club was originally founded in 1896, and like many early clubs, was forced to change locations as the club evolved. Wyantenuck existed in three locations and settled at the current site when the Baldwin Farm was purchased to expand recreational and social offerings. The property was purchased in 1912 and the current golf course was opened for play in 1915. The clubhouse is a lightly converted horse barn, preserved by the club for its architectural heritage, and is arguably the clubs most prominent landmark. It continues to be considered one of the most unique and iconic clubhouses in golf.
