24 Players Secure Their Place In 42nd Mass Mid-Amateur Through Opening Week Of Qualifying
The Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, one of the most anticipated late summer events on the Mass Golf schedule, began the qualifying process this week with 18-hole qualifiers held Tuesday at Fall River Country Club and Thursday at Northern Spy Golf Club in Townsend.
This year’s championship will take place at Andover Country Club for the first time from September 8-10. The event is open to any amateur golfers (age 25+) as of September 8, 2025, who have an active Mass Golf Membership and a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.0 (at the time of registration).
On Tuesday at Fall River, Ryan Derosier (Olde Scotland Links) and Jonathan Jones (The Milton-Hoosic Club) shot the lowest score among 12 who qualified by finishing with an even-par 70. After going 3-over on the front nine, Jones caught fire on the back, making birdie on four of the next five holes to secure his place in the field.
Chad Bearce (Foxborough Country Club), who will turn 25 next month, qualified for his first mid-amateur, knocking down an eagle on the par-5 10th with a birdie on the next hole to help him finish with a 71. His score matched former New England Senior Amateur winner John McNeill (Amateur Golf Tour of NE) and Ernest McAlister (Wollaston Golf Club). Nick Leblanc (Wayland Country Club) and Eddie Newland (Boston Golf Club) each needed a birdie on the 18th to make it above the cutline at 3-over 73. For Newland, it was his lone birdie of the day, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

On Thursday at Northern Spy, 12 more players qualified, including Matthew Shubley (Segregansett Country Club), Jackson Kingman (Concord Country Club), and Christopher Gentle (Mount Pleasant Golf Club), who each led the way at 3-under-par 67. Gentile had a particularly smooth round with four birdies and just one bogey. Same goes for Matthew Conti (Walpole Country Club) and Sam Grindle (Haverhill Golf & Country Club), who both shot even-par with just one birdie. Grindle knocked down his on the par-4 6th, with Conti’s coming on the par-4 18th.
Josh Biren (Pine Brook Country Club) was one of four players to qualify on the number at 1-over 71, carding bogey-free 2-under on the back nine to rally himself into a spot. Andrew Sokol (Haverhill Golf & Country Club) also earned a late birdie on the par-3 17th to qualify at 1-over.
