The massachusetts women’s amateur returns to concord country club for a sixth time

By Tori Schuller

CONCORD, Massachusetts (August 7, 2025) — For the first time in 11 years, the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship is returning to Concord Country Club, with an 80-player field hungry for a win.

This will be the sixth time Concord has hosted the Women’s Amateur, with its most recent Mass Golf Championship hosting experience taking place in 2022, at the Massachusetts Amateur Championship.

Concord first hosted the Women’s Amateur in 1960, with a win from Gene McAuliffe. Its next four hosting opportunities came in 1978, 1997, 2004, and 2014, with wins from Jeanne-Marie Boylan, Karen Richardson, Briana Vega, and Isabel Southard.

The field will fight for the trophy from Monday August 11, to Friday, August 15. The 11th and 12th bring 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, with the field of 80 players vying for 32 match play spots.

On Wednesday, the 13th, the format turns to match play, and the 32-player field will battle for 16 spots in the afternoon, then cut to 8 for the morning of Thursday, the 14th. By the evening of the 14th, after two rounds of match play, the final match will be set; an 18-hole match play battle to take home the trophy for the 122nd Massachusetts Women’s Amateur.

While Concord has been the site of many notable championships recently, the history of the course dates back to 1895, when a group of Concord golfers, led by Moses Bradford, formed the Concord Golf Club. In its inaugural season, nine holes were laid out on land leased from William Wheeler at the foot of Nashawtuc Hill. Memberships were made available at entrance fees of $5.00 with annual dues of the same amount! The following year a clubhouse was built, and the club was welcomed as a member of the USGA, joining other early Massachusetts golf clubs, including The Country Club, Essex County Club, Myopia Hunt Club and Wollaston Golf Club.

For the next fifteen years, the members improved their golf course and added other facilities, including tennis, but were fearful of investing more funds on leased property. When Mr. Wheeler declined an offer from the club to purchase its leased land, a special meeting of the Concord Golf Club in 1913 voted to acquire John Brown’s farm as a permanent home for the new Concord Country Club. Donald Ross, the well-known golf architect, was hired to design a nine-hole course at the new location – the current holes 1, 8, 9 and 13-18.  A decade later, Ross returned to design nine additional holes, in the process making Concord Country Club’s new 18 hole-course one of the finest and most difficult in Massachusetts. The course that will greet the contestants during the Women’s Amateur is largely the same course that opened for play in 1930, a testing and demanding example of Donald Ross’ craftsmanship.

Concord presents one of the longest courses by total length in recent years during stroke play (yardage approx.):

2025 — Concord Country Club, Concord (6,016 yards)

2024 — Taconic Golf Club, Williamstown (5,895 yards)

2023 — Dedham Country & Polo Club, Dedham (5,797 yards)

2022 — Orchards Golf Club, South Hadley (6,044 yards)

2021 — Plymouth Country Club, Plymouth (5,884 yards)

2020 — Essex Country Club, Manchester-by-the-Sea (5,975 yards)

2019 — Weston Golf Club, Weston (5,882 yards)

2018 — George Wright Golf Course, Boston (5,901 yards)

A famous trio in the field include Maddie, Morgan, and Molly Smith, three sisters who are excelling in the sport across the country. Maddie is a rising senior at Westford Academy, and is a Fall 2026 commit to the University of Memphis.

Molly, a previous finalist in the 2023 Massachusetts Women’s Amateur, is a rising junior at the University of Central Florida, ending her sophomore season with 3 top-3 finishes. Molly also became the first woman to compete in the Massachusetts Amateur Championship, in 2023.

Earlier this week, Morgan, a member of the women’s golf team at the University of Georgia, competed in the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur, hosted at Bandon Dunes.

Morgan was joined at the U.S. Women’s Amateur by two previous winners of the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur, Allison Paik (Ledgemont Country Club), and Rebecca Skoler (Pine Brook Country Club). While Paik is not in the field this year, Skoler will be battling for the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship trophy next week.

Skoler recently finished her collegiate career at the University of Virginia, and is in this year’s field for the Women’s Amateur as well, paired with Megan Buck (Thorny Lea Golf Club) and Phoebe Brinker (George Wright Golf Course).

Entering the field alongside Buck is Shannon Johnson (Thorny Lea Golf Club). The pair earned their sixth straight trophy in the Women’s Four-Ball this year, with Buck winning her ninth overall. Johnson earned her first Massachusetts Women’s Amateur trophy in 2018, at George Wright Golf Course.
