3 Spots Up for Grabs To U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships

NORTON, Massachusetts – Beginning Monday, more Massachusetts golfers will look to advance to national USGA competition when Mass Golf hosts both a U.S. Junior Amateur Championship qualifier and a U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship qualifier at Marlborough Country Club.

On Monday morning, a full 84 competitor field will vie for three qualifying spots and two alternate spots to the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, being contested at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio in mid-July, while 34 will look to capture one of three spots to the 71st U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship taking place at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wisconsin beginning July 22. The afternoon qualifier is slated to begin at 12:50 p.m. Both qualifiers will be contested at 18 holes.

Of the 84 players in the field, 48 of them list their residency in Massachusetts. This year’s qualifying field includes several competitors who have had success in Mass Golf competition, including reigning Mass Golf Christopher Cutler Rich Junior Player of the Year James Imai, a 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier, as well as 2017 Mass Golf Young Golfers’ Amateur champion Joseph Lenane. Open to competitors who are age 19, the field will look to join defending U.S. Junior Amateur champion, Michael Thorbjornsen of Wellesley, in the Championship Proper field in Ohio.

Nearly half of the 34-player field in Monday afternoon’s qualifier will be competing in their home state on Monday as three spots to this year’s U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship Proper. Among the notable players in the qualifying field are Lunenburg’s Emily Nash, who looks to make her second straight appearance in the national event, while Anne Walsh, Gabrielle Shieh, and Rebecca Skoler, the reigning Mass Golf Girls’ Junior champion, who all competed in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball earlier this year. All competitors in the championship must be under 19 years old prior to the start of the Championship on July 22.
