16 Advance To Match Play at 2026 Girls' Junior Amateur Championship - MASSGOLF

16 advance to match play at Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship

By Aidan McLaughlin

SOUTH HADLEY, Massachusetts (July 21, 2026) – As Day 2 of the 93rd Massachusetts Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship Powered by KOHR Golf came and went, so did scattered showers that brought wet conditions for most of the morning. Defending champion Maddie Smith (Mount Pleasant Golf Club) ran away with medalist this time around, shooting a 3-under par 68, extending her lead to nine shots.

As the tournament moves onto match play, the field of 48 was cut down to 16 girls, which inevitably needed a four-for-two playoff where Callie Crean (Youth on Course/Mass Golf) and Sophie Chong (Nashawtuc Country Club) both snuck in on the 2nd playoff hole.

Smith continued her second round right where she left off, putting together a bogey-free front nine that included an eagle and a birdie on the fifth and sixth holes, respectively.

“I had a good par there yesterday, so I went into the hole with a little bit of confidence… Today I was in the first cut [Smith’s tee shot], so almost fairway and I had a good view so I was like, you know what? Let’s send it, and I had about 20 feet, a pretty good look, and I made it, so that was good.” Smith added about her eagle on five.

As she moved to the back nine, she would stay steady and finish with a birdie-bogey-birdie sequence.

“On 16, I had a wedge in, which was nice. I hit it to about 4 or 5 feet and got my head back into it. When I got to 17, I just hit a bad tee shot and took myself out of play… and then 18, I hit a good tee ball, which helps when it’s a reachable par-5, and then I had like a 20-footer, which I made for birdie,” Smith said on her final three holes.

Another notable from moving day was Maddie Chang (Youth on Course/Mass Golf), who, despite shooting a 10-over 82 on Monday, bounced back with an even-par 72. Chang’s round was capped off with a birdie on the par-5 18th to get her back to even par.

In the playoff, Crean and Chong advanced on the 2nd playoff hole, carding a birdie and a par, respectively.
