NORTON, Massachusetts – After qualifying events this week at Wedgewood Pines Country Club and Indian Ridge Country Club, only one more remains for the 37th Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, which will take place from September 8-10 at GreatHorse in Hampden.
On Wednesday, Brian Faulk shot 1-under to qualifier to lead 13 qualifiers at his home course of Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover. Faulk, the head golf coach at Phillips Andover, played a steady round with two birdies and a bogey.
Chris Piscatelli (Wayland CC) shot 1-over to finish T2, while fellow Indian Ridge members Bill Bieren (1-over), Brendan Livingston (3-over) and David Gilbert (5-over) also qualified.
Shuvam Bhaumik (Thorny Lea GC), who shot a 3-under in the opening round at last year’s Mass Mid-Amateur, also qualified by shooting a 5-over 77.
On Monday, 14 players advanced through Wedgewood Pines including J.C. Guthrie (Oak Hill CC), who made four birdies en route to a 2-under 68. Guthrie, who won the Mass Four-Ball with Matthew Leger back in 2015, also played in the Mass Mid-Amateur in 2011, 2016 and 2018.
Jesse Santos (Northern Spy GC) made birdie five times to finish solo second with a 1-over 71.
Wedgewood members Ray Garcia, Angelo Pucillo and Jim Gregg all shot 3-over 73 to advance to the Championship Proper. Despite shooting 6-over on the front nine, Pucillo shot 3-under on the back, finishing with three consecutive birdies.
John Flaherty (George Wright GC) shot 7-over on the front nine but made birdie on the final four holes to finish 3-over.
Additional competitors who finished one spot below the final qualifying spot earned alternate status and will be placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the Mass Golf Policies and Procedures Page.
