Five Bay Staters Head West for the 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship - MASSGOLF

NORTON, Massachusetts – Two weeks removed from sending nine Bay State competitors to California for the U.S. Amateur Championship, Massachusetts will once again have a noteworthy presence on the west coast as five competitors from the Mass Golf ranks will begin play in the 64th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, being contested at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon from August 25-30.

The five Bay Staters will be among the 156 in the field when the stroke play portion of the tournament kicks off on Saturday. Following the completion 36-hole stroke play portion on Sunday, the top-64 competitors will advance to match play beginning on Monday, August 27. The Championship will conclude with a 18-hole match on Thursday to crown the U.S. Senior Amateur champion.

Of the five competitors in the field, four advanced from the Allendale Country Club sectional qualifier on August 1, part of a Mass Golf sweep of the event, while Boxford’s Frank Vana, Jr., a 2017 semifinalist at the championship, earned an automatic exemption into the championship field.

In addition to Vana, Jr., the Massachusetts contingency consists of Kevin Carey and Joe Walker, both multi-time club champions at Dennis Pines Golf Course in Dennis, Stow’s John McNeill and Boxford’s Stephen Camara.

Allendale Country Club was the site for one of the 50 sectional qualifiers held across the U.S. between July 16 and August 10.
