Massachusetts Junior Golfers Commit To College Programs

College golf commitments got underway this week with the start of the NCAA Early Signing Period, as high school golfer signed their National Letter of Intent. Within the first week, nearly a dozen Mass Golf junior players signed commitments to Division I programs.

The signing period for fall 2022 enrollees at Division I & II programs began November 10 and lasts until August 1, 2022. This story will be updated as more Massachusetts golfers sign their commitments to college programs.

AIDEN AZEVEDO – BRYANT UNIVERSITY

Azevedo, a senior at Haverhill High School, won the Merrimack Valley Conference individual title at this year’s league championship. This summer, Azevedo tallied a T5 finish at the Northern Junior Championship in Connecticut, and last winter represented New England at the Doral Publix Junior Championship.

 

 

 

JOHN BRODERICK – VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY

Broderick, a senior at Belmont Hill School, broke onto the scene last year with a thrilling playoff victory in the 2020 New England Amateur, propelling him to the Mass Golf Junior Player of the Year Award. In 2021, the lefty won the Mass Four-Ball with Weston Jones and made it to the Round of 32 of match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Pinehurst. He also competed in the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett CC (RI).

 

 

MITCHELL BULLETt – ASSUMPTION UNIVERSITY

Bullet, the senior captain of the Wachusett High School golf team, helped the Mountaineers go undefeated in Central Mass. Pod 8 matches during his junior season. He shot a 3-over-par 38 at Gardner Municipal Golf Course and a 2-over-par 38 at Bedrock Golf Club. Bullett is a two-time Mid-Wach A all-star selection and a Worcester Telegram & Gazette all-star.

 

 

PHOEBE CHAMIAN – HOLY CROSS

Chamian, a senior from Belmont High School, has been a four-year starter on boys golf team and a captain her senior year. She helped BHS Golf to win the Middlesex League title in 2019 and advance to the State finals in 2019 and 2021. Chamian, a member of Nashawtuc Country Club, finished fifth in the 2021 Middlesex League Shootout and was named a league all-star. In the final regular season match of her high school career, she aced the par-3, 2nd at Renaissance. Chamian competed in the 2021 National High School Invitational at Pinehurst, 2021 IMG World Championship at Torrey Pines and 2021 Optimist International at Doral. 

JAELYN DEBOISE – STONEHILL COLLEGE

DeBoise, a senior at Pope Francis Preparatory School in Springfield, had a stellar fall season.  She won the Western Mass. Girls Golf Individual title by 8 strokes at The Country Club of Wilbraham and finished 10th overall in the girls division of the New England Interscholastic Golf Championships. In 2020, she won the Silver Division of the Massachusetts Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship and has won Most Improved in the event four times.

 

AIDAN EMMERICH – MICHIGAN STATE

Emmerich, a senior at St. Mary’s School in Lynn, led his team to three consecutive state championship victories. Perhaps his best performance of the fall came this past October when Emmerich set a course record with an 8-under 61 at Hillview Golf Course in North Reading during the Catholic Central League tournament.  Emmerich also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur in the summer and was stroke play medalist in the 2020 Mass Junior Amateur.

 

JIMMY KANNALLY – ASSUMPTION UNIVERSITY

Kannally, a senior at Bishop Feehan High School, was the senior captain for his high school squad during the fall season and a Catholic Central League All-Star. A member of Walpole Country Club, Kannally has competed in several U.S. Challenge Cup and NEGPA Junior events. He also competed in the Northern Junior Championship in Connecticut.

 

 

Josh Lavallee – Chaminade University

Lavallee, a 2021 graduate of Central Catholic High School, has spent the past semester at IMG Academy in Florida and will enroll in Chaminade this spring. A 3-time team MVP for Central Catholic, Lavallee became the school’s first individual MIAA state champion in 2018 and was second in the 2020 Massachusetts state championship. Lavalee is also a member of Bradford Country Club and has earned several accolades from the Boston Globe and Boson Herald.

 

JOEY LENANE – NORTH CAROLINA STATE

Lenane, a senior at Xaverian Brothers High School, is this year’s top-ranked junior golfer in Massachusetts according to the AJGA. In 2021, Lenane qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur, earned stroke-play medalist in the Mass Junior Amateur, and won the prestigious Tarlow Invitational. After leading Xaverian to a MIAA Division 1 South title, Lenane closed out his high school career with medalist honors in the New England High School Championships. Last year, Lenane shot a 65 to set the course record at Green Hill Golf Course in Worcester to qualify for the Massachusetts Amateur.

morgan macleod – Merrimack college

MacLeod, a senior at St. Mary’s Bayview Academy in East Providence, Rhode Island, is a member of Foxborough Country Club. The North Attleboro native, made the RI Scholastic Girls Golf First Team All-State in 2019 and 2021 and won the US Challenge Cup Ocean State Classic.

 

 

 

AIDAN O’DONOVAN – university of RHODE ISLAND

O’Donovan, a senior at Somerville High School, won the Greater Boston League Golf Championship this season. The Northeastern Conference all-star also qualified for the 2022 U.S. Four-Ball Championship with Joey Lenane. Earlier this year, O’Donovan won the Bayberry Hills Club Championship, made the cut at the New England Amateur and tied for first in the Dale Smith Memorial and the Gatley Cup.

 

 

JAMES ROBBINS – BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY

Robbins, a senior at North Andover High School, has been one of the standout players in the Merrimack Valley region. Robbins finished T5 overall in the MIAA Division 2 state championship this season and was a Boston Globe All-Scholastic Honorable Mention selection for Fall 2020-21. In 2019, he made the quarterfinals of the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship and won the MIAA Division 1 North Sectional individual title.

 

 

Jared shea – Bentley university

Shea, who graduated from Norwood High School last year, was a two-time Tri-Valley League All-Star for the Mustangs. Shea is in the midst of a gap year but carries a 0 handicap out of Norfolk Golf Club.

 

 

 

 

COLIN SPENCER – UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT

Spencer, a senior at Mashpee High School, has emerged as one of the top junior players in Massachusetts. Spencer won the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship this past August at Indian Pond Country Club and recently won the MIAA Division 3 state championship by a commanding 12 strokes at Shining Rock Golf Club. Spencer also finished second overall in the New England Junior Amateur Championship.

 

 

owen talbot – st. andrews university

Talbot, a senior at Brockton High School, was captain for the Boxers this past season and shot a season-best 34 during the regular season. Talbot is a two-time Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic Selection and last year was a Southeastern Conference All-Star with an average score of 39.6. St. Andrews, which is part of the NAIA, is located about 30 miles south of Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

 

 

liam tenney – assumption University

Tenney, a senior at St. John’s High School (Shrewsbury), helped the Pioneers win the MIAA Division 1 Central Title this past season and the Cape Cod National Golf Club High School Invitational. He also competed in the Northern Junior Championship in Connecticut.

 

 

 

PETER TOrRES – ST. ANSelm COLLEGE

Torres, a senior at Dighton-Rehoboth High School, won medalist to lead the Eagles to the South Coast Conference Championship during the 2021 spring season. He also led his team to a 15-win season in the fall. During the summer, Torres won the Taunton Junior City Open with scores of 71-68–139 to win the title by 8 strokes. A member of Segregansett Country Club,  Torres also qualified for the 2021 Massachusetts Junior Amateur.

 

MACKENZIE WHITNEY – SIENA COLLEGE

Whitney, a senior at Oakmont Regional High School, is the youngest women’s club champion in the history of Oak Hill Country Club. Earlier this year, Whitney aced the par-4 9th for the first ace of her golf career. Whitney also qualified for match play in the 2021 Massachusetts Women’s Amateur and the year prior finished T4 in the New England Junior PGA Championship.

 

 

matthew williams – holy cross

Williams, a senior at St. Sebastian’s School, led his team to an 11-1 record this past spring. This summer Williams shot a 69 in the opening round of the AJGA Killington Junior Golf Championship.
