BREWSTER, Massachusetts – The Fall Cup season concluded Wednesday at Cape Cod National Golf Club with the team of six women from TPC Boston raising the club’s third championship title in the event since 2013. Since the Fall Cup started in 2009, TPC Boston is the only club to win the event three times. Oakley CC won the net division title and will also be included on the Fall Cup trophy.
The Fall Cup competition is a statewide tournament that featured three matches in September. Teams of six females from each club were broken into 19, 4-team regional divisions, forming exciting matchups between Mass Golf Member Clubs. The top team from each region following those three matches earned the right to compete in Wednesday’s Fall Cup Championship. Golfers started Wednesday with sunny and no wind but finished in blustery conditions.
“Cape Cod National was the ideal venue for the Fall Cup Championship, as it was an unfamiliar and challenging course for most of the field,” said Patrick Fannon, Mass Golf’s Manager of Women’s Events and Member Days.
The championship format was Four-ball stroke play gross and net, with the total score for each team of 6 determined by the aggregate total of its 3 pairs.
TPC Boston emerged with the top team gross score of 28-over 244. Fitchburg-based Oak Hill Country Club finished five strokes back for second place, while Oakley Country Club was third at 254.
TPC Boston’s duo of Kim Zenisky and Toni Ventresca, finished with a 1-over-par 73. Zenisky shot 79 with birdies on the par-3, 123-yard 6th hole and the par-5, 415-yard 15th hole. The pair also made par on 13 holes.
Former WGAM President Leslie Logan & Tina Newman and Sue Mackey & AnneMarie Freitas also represented TPC Boston as the pairs shot 85 and 86, respectively, to round out the team effort.
Oak Hill’s top pair of Joanne Catlin and Susan Lemay also shot 1-over 73, and each player birdied twice. Catlin, who tied Framingham Country Club’s Gail Galin for the low individual score of 78, birdied a pair of par-3s (6th and 16th). Lemay made birdie on the par-4, 225-yard 7th hole and on the par-5 15th.
Michelle Lemay & Susan Crotty carded a 77 for Oak Hill, but TPC Boston’s final pair bested Oak Hill’s by 13 strokes.
TPC Boston’s road to the Fall Cup Championship title began in September when it competed against teams from Braintree MGC, Nashawtuc Country Club and William J Devine Golf Course. TPC Boston won Region 8 with 89 points, edging runner-up Braintree by 8.5 to advance to the championship.
Framingham CC led all teams with 108.5 points in the September matches, but it placed 10th out of 19 teams in the championship.
Watertown-based Oakley CC won the overall net division title with a score of 17-under 199. Walpole Country Club, Scituate Country Club, Charter Oak (Hudson) and Woodland GC (Newton) all tied for second place as they were four strokes back at 13-under 203.
Representing Oakley was Sharon Hayes, Thalia Meehan, Christina Babigian, Ann McMackin, Sharon Bazarian and Jill Khederian. Oakley won Region 16 with 85.5 points, edging Concord CC by a point. Oakley also beat Blue Hill (80) and 2018 Fall Cup champion Presidents GC in the region.
